LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon.In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears.She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer.She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger.She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger.It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened. Friends and strangers lent and donated her everything she needed, including a bike rental for the day."Don't have the words to describe the gratitude in my heart ... and I will be at that start line Sunday!" said Sterger.Sterger says neighbors saw a large group of teenage boys walking out of the home carrying stuff that night. Deputies say one of the boys has been arrested. LAKESIDE (CNS) - A blaze burned roughly a half-acre of vegetation in a remote area north of Lakeside Friday morning before crews were able to get a handle on the flames.The fire was reported around 4:15 a.m. off state Route 67 about a mile north of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road, according to Cal Fire San Diego.Within 10 minutes the blaze had grown to about a half-acre, but crews were able to halt the forward rate of spread by 4:35 a.m., the state agency reported.No structures were threatened and no injuries were immediately reported. 544

There are virtual activities hosted through the fair, and one food vendor is still bringing fair food to the community. Chicken Charlie’s is known for deep-fried everything, from Oreos to meat, and this year, the new addition is deep fried taffy. While the fair won’t be happening, Charlie Boughosian has brought his trailer to the Grossmont Center in La Mesa to bring fried food to the community. Friday would have been the first day of the fair, so Charlie made it the first day of shop in the parking lot. “I’m feeling the same kind of pressure I feel on opening day of the fair,” he said Friday. LANCASTER, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man whose body was found in a stone pillar in Lancaster Saturday could be the remains of a man who ran from police earlier in the week, according to KTLA. The body was found inside a stone pillar outside the WinCo Foods grocery store on the 700 block of West Avenue K around 2:40 p.m. Saturday.Earlier that morning, a manager at the store reported a foul smell coming from the pillar. The manager called a plumber thinking there was a sewage problem.When the plumber arrived and began knocking away the pillar’s stone, a leg and tennis shoes were visible. After arriving on scene, police were able to link the body to an incident earlier in the week.On Monday, a man was pulled over after being suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, police told KTLA. The man ran from police onto the rooftop of the grocery store which, according to authorities, has access to the inside of the pillars.Police say it’s possible that the man fell or climbed into one of the pillars to escape from authorities. With a recent heat wave and the density of the pillars, police say it’s possible the man became trapped and unable to breathe. 1167

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protesters gathered at the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday evening, once again calling for more transparency and accountability from the department. The protest came just a few days after the department announced that former LMPD officer Matt Dages was no longer employed with the department. Dages was the officer caught on video during the arrest of Amaurie Johnson in May. The charges against Johnson were later dropped. Activists say the department's statement about Dages' employment was vague. They want the former officer charged and arrested.In a press conference hours before the protest, Johnson said he wants equality and will keep fighting for change until it happens. The protest remained peaceful; officers did detain a counter-protester but later told ABC 10News he was released after determining no crime had been committed. 877
