SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new plan is calling for more than 170,000 new homes across the San Diego region over the next decade.The San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs 171,685 housing units by 2029 to meet demand. On Friday, its board approved a plan that divvied up those units across the region's 18 cities and unincorporated county based on a formula of job growth and access to transit. "We are in the midst of a housing crisis. It's time to act. Doing things the same way is not going to give us a different result," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The debate at the SANDAG meeting lasted about four hours, with some of the county's smaller cities saying the plan gave them an undue burden they could not meet. "It is impossible," said National City councilman Ron Morrison, who is not on the board. "Our urban reserve is the weeds behind the backstop in the little field. There is no place to build."National City's mayor Alejandra Sotello-Solis supported the proposal. Most of the homes, 107,901, will go in the City of San Diego. Chula Vista will be responsible for 11,105; Imperial Beach will add 1,375; Coronado 1,001, and Del Mar 163. Del Mar Deputy Mayor Ellie Haviland voted in favor of the plan, though she said she didn't know where those 163 homes could go. "If we are pushing housing away from transit and away from jobs, then that is not going to work with the regional transportation plan we are trying to build," she said. Del Mar Councilwoman Terry Gaasterland, who opposes the plan but did not have a vote, noted Del Mar added 20 housing units in the past 10 years. The board initially voted down the proposal, but Faulconer then called for a weighted vote based on population - getting the necessary votes to pass.Coronado, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, Poway, Escondido, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, El Cajon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North Park house, empty for years, has nearby neighbors frustrated about the lack of action taken to clean up the property they say has become a magnet for crime. "We have people that are squatting here, we've had illicit drug use, we've had prostitutes, we've had an increase in break ins in the area, " said Alan Nelson, who lives across the street. Nelson says even though he and others call the police, unless it's an emergency they can't always come out. He has called and emailed Councilman Chis Ward's office repeatedly about the matter but isn't happy with the response he's received. Ward's office says the property is in foreclosure and the case is being handled by the city attorney's office. They issued the following statement to 10News:"My office has been working with the San Diego police department and city code enforcement to address the illegal activity occurring at this property. Public safety is and will always remain my most pressing priority." A code compliance hearing for the property is scheduled for late April. 1106

According to the University of Southern California Casden Economics Forecast, “even under the best case standard, few units in Southern California are affordable.”By 2020, the report forecasts that average monthly rents will increase by 9 in San Diego County, the highest among all Southern California areas.The report predicts that the San Diego will continue to see economic and population growth over the “foreseeable future” with the economy’s leading sectors continuing to draw a variety of workers.The forecast also shows San Diego’s popularity among older members of the population, including retirees.As a result, housing demand will continue in both the renter and owner-occupied markets, leading rents to increase as vacancy rates remain low.In 2020, the average rent is predicted to be ,187 with a 3.75 percent vacancy rate. 995
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego gym owner said he is keeping his doors open despite state restrictions on indoor operations that took effect early Wednesday morning.For Shawn Gilbert, the owner of Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, keeping his business open is a matter of survival."I took a huge financial hit in May. Money out of my pocket that's never coming back. We have bills to pay, we have rent to pay,” Gilbert told ABC 10News.Gilbert said he believes his gym can operate safely with face covering and social distancing guidelines because it is a large, open space with high ceilings. The gym also has an outdoor space that Gilbert plans to also utilize.According to Gilbert, none of his gym members or employees have tested positive for coronavirus.Gilbert told ABC 10News he’s prepared for any possible citations for staying open."We have a lawyer with six other gyms, all representing us gym owners. According to the poll, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is leading the race, followed by Republican Carl DeMaio and Republican Darrell Issa. Meanwhile, the poll is also an indication of how district residents feel about a number of issues, including impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. To get the data, SurveyUSA interviewed 770 voting-age individuals in California’s 50th Congressional District between September 27 and October 2. Of the voting-age individuals surveyed, 671 are registered to vote in the state. 592 of those registered voters were likely to vote in the 2020 California Primary, SurveyUSA says.
