SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ridesharing company, Lyft, is donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in ride credits to immigration groups throughout the country, including one in San Diego County. The company made the donation announcement on Monday, donating 0,000, calling the campaign "America is an Idea, Not a Geography." The Minority Humanitarian Foundation in Spring Valley received roughly ,000 in ride credits. The foundation's founder, Mark Lane, says the company's donation is a game changer for his organization. Lane explains that the money previously spent on rides can now go towards other things like food, clothing and other supplies. 10News spoke to multiple Lyft drivers in San Diego who said they wouldn't mind providing rides to migrants, as long as their pay didn't change. A few Lyft users told 10News they don't agree with Lyft's donation but said they would still continue to use the service.During the month of July, Lyft is also matching donations to RAICES up to ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District approved a plan Tuesday night that outlines how the district plans to reopen in the fall. The school board voted unanimously to move forward with a plan that would allow parents to decide if their students return to campus in the fall of 2020 or continue distance learning at home. Students returning to in-person learning will go to school for the full day of class every day, not a staggered schedule. All in-person learning is subject to federal and local health guidelines like wearing a mask, 6 feet of social distancing, and frequent hand washing. If parents feel their child is not ready to go back to campus, they can continue online. The district called it "Distance Learning 2.0," an improvement to the current online learning in place. The board voted to move forward with the plan despite only having enough funding for only half of the school year. The second half is dependent on federal funding. This does not mean the district would run out of money for the year; it means all students would have to return to online learning for the second half of the year. School board members said this vote was just the beginning of a long process to restart school in the fall, adding that things could be updated as local and state guidelines change. 1323
