(KGTV) - Experts from the San Diego Zoo have been sent to Madagascar to help care for nearly 11,000 tortoises discovered in a massive poaching bust.The April 10 discovery by local police found the tortoises covering virtually every room in the raided home. The animals did not have access to food or water.Since the discovery, hundreds of the tortoises had died from dehydration and illness.RELATED: Tortoise with broken shell recovering after surgeryAuthorities believe the 10,976 tortoises discovered were part of illegal pet trading and planned for shipment to Asia. There, tortoises shells are highly prized, officials said.San Diego Zoo officials will help supply medical supplies, administer care, and general assistance, according to the zoo."Unfortunately we have had a number of situations in recent years where our staff has been called upon to assist animals that have been caught up in wildlife trafficking,” Kim Lovich, curator of reptiles at San Diego Zoo, said. "This is an overwhelming situation, where we recognize that every individual we save may make the difference between this species’ long-term survival and its extinction. We have to help."Crews are working to relocate the surviving tortoises to SOPTOM-Villages des Tortues, a 17-acre private wildlife facility in Ifaty, for further care.Zoo officials say radiated tortoise populations have declined more than 80 percent in the last 30 years. (KGTV) — At least 50,000 people were ordered to evacuate as multiple fires burned north of Los Angeles Thursday amid dangerously dry and windy conditions.The Tick Fire started about 2 p.m. in the Canyon Country area of Santa Clarita and spread east to Agua Dulce. Cal Fire reported about 8:30 p.m. the fire had spread to 3,950 acres. Several structures were lost. As of 6:20 p.m., firefighters had slowed the fire's progress.Mandatory Tick Fire evacuations are in effect for all residents north of 14 freeway, east of Whites/Plum Canyon, south of Vasquez Canyon, west of Agua Dolce. (KGTV) — Facebook told 10News Friday they are aware of a disturbing viral video showing abuse of a child and have removed it from the social media platform.In a Facebook post Sunday, a person is seen repeatedly slapping a child on the head with both hands throughout the 47-second video. The young child is seen screaming next to a bucket clutching a towel, as the person pummels the child with slaps.The video of the apparent abuse originated in South Africa, a Facebook spokesperson told 10News.
