YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health reported 1,397 deaths from infectious diseases on the mainland in July.Some 750,000 infections were registered last month, including 10 cholera infections, according to a statement released Tuesday by the ministry.No plague cases or deaths from cholera were reported in July, the statement said.Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.More than 350,000 cases of Class B diseases were also reported in the month, with 1,251 of them resulting in death.Tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhea were among the five most frequently reported cases in the month, accounting for 94 percent of all Class B cases, the statement said.The death toll due to Class C disease was 146. The top three Class C diseases were hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), infectious diarrhea and mumps, which accounted for over 98 percent of cases in this category, the statement said.

CHANGSHA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from a Friday explosion in Changsha City, capital of central China's Hunan Province, has risen to four with 19 people injured, local police said.The explosion went off on the third floor of a branch of Furong District's taxation office on Hengda Road near a downtown residential block at about 4:15 p.m., according to a statement from the city's police.Initial investigations show the explosion was a planned attack, the police said.The police sealed off the building and blocked nearby roads for investigation. All the workers in the building had already evacuated before the police came.Windows of the third floor were all shattered. Large blood stains could been seen on the stairs.The injured have been sent to the hospital.In a separate case in northeast China's Jilin Province, one people was killed and 20 were injured Friday in a series of explosions in a barber's shop in provincial capital Changchun.Four fire fighters were among the injured of the explosions which first blasted at 4:46 p.m, according to a statement from the municipal government.Witnesses say four explosions hit the shop.Fire fighters and workers from a local gas supply company are working at the site. Pieces of shattered windows can be seen forty meters away.The police are investigating the cause of the explosion.

Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. The nations, however, should understand the common and mutual responsibilities in the global economic system.The delegates to the G20 summit will adjust their polices after consultations, but nobody will bend under pressure, he stressed.Dvorkovich said that several countries may voice concerns over China's exchange rate policies at the summits, but there will not be large-scale discussions over the Chinese currency.The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced on Saturday a decision to proceed further with the reform of the exchange rate regime to enhance the flexibility of the RMB's exchange rate.
