SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled.After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's newly renamed Museum of Us will reopen to visitors this week.The museum, formerly called the Museum of Man, will reopen on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. under the state's new guidelines for museums during the coronavirus pandemic.The Museum of Us will operate at 25% capacity when it reopens and all guests will be required to wear a face covering. Other measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 include:Plexiglass is in place at the admission desk to minimize contact.Guests are required to keep 6 feet of distance between other visitors.Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum.Guests will be given a personal pencil to use throughout interactive exhibits.Guests will be provided a suggested linear path of travel to promote social distancing.Handrails and other surfaces throughout the museum are frequently sanitized for your safety.The museum is encouraging guests to also purchase their tickets ahead of time online or by using debit or credit cars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Red Cross Volunteers are stepping up to help the many communities at risk of Hurricane Dorian's wrath.So far 20 volunteers have been assigned to the disaster, 18 will be on the ground, and two are working remotely.John Stone is deploying Tuesday evening to South Carolina, he's responded to over 20 disasters."You catch the bug, I mean you're helping people recover from a natural disaster, every disaster is different," said Stone. Stone says this deployment is more personal; his daughter lives in Charleston."I emphasize with her to have a plan, be ready to go, it's my grandchildren you're dealing with, I want you to be safe," said Stone.At any moment, the local Red Cross could be asked to send more volunteers. On Monday night, more than 12,200 people stayed in 171 Red Cross and community evacuation shelters in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's shifting real-estate market could mean new opportunities for entry-level home buyers.A new study from realestate.com says the rate of appreciation for homes at the lower third of the price range are appreciating at 2.2 percent annually. That's a large drop off from the 10.4 percent price growth those homes saw from 2017 to 2018. “Those homes, priced in the bottom third of the market, have been appreciating the fastest and have seen the least inventory in recent years and price cuts are becoming more common as the balance between buyers and sellers is trending toward evening out," said Skylar Olsen, director of economic research for Zillow Group, which owns realestate.com "That’s not a huge surprise, as annual home-value appreciation has been well above historic norms for some time, and was due to slow back toward normal.”The typical entry level home in San Diego County is now worth 4,500. That's still a hefty price for San Diego renters who are paying an average of about ,000 a month and struggling to save for a down payment. Still, down payment assistance programs are available through the County and San Diego Housing Commission. Additionally, potential buyers can qualify for an F.H.A. loan with as little as 3.5 percent down. And Veterans can buy homes with nothing down through a V.A. loan. Carlos Espinoza and his wife Esther are buying a two-bedroom condo in Rancho Penasquitos for 9,000, the full asking price. They put 12 percent down, which they accumulated by increasing contributions to Carlos's 401(K), then borrowing from that fund. "Save as much as you can, even though sometimes you may feel like it's not enough," Carlos said. "The American Dream is alive again."Rich Kushner, a realtor with Burke Real Estate Consultants, said the most important thing an entry level buyer can do is get pre-approved for a loan. That will cause a seller to take an offer more seriously."Everything's negotiable when you write a contract, but you're going to have a stronger offer if you have a pre-approval letter," Kushner said.
