If you're able to donate, make sure you do your homework, and make a plan for your money so that it supports a worthy cause.Court documents from September detail a four-state investigation that shut down a sham charity, which, according to investigators, bilked consumers out of millions. They claimed to use donations to help homeless veterans, breast cancer survivors, and disabled law enforcement. But the real people in need got next to nothing."The fraudsters out there are relying on your generosity your good wishes, the fact that you can’t say no when somebody says something like veterans or children or breast cancer- they want to tug on those heartstrings," said Yael Fuchs, President of the National Association of State Charity Officials (NASCO). "NASCO was formed so that state charity regulators can talk to each other, so that we can learn from each other, so that we can share tips and make sure that we are coordinating our enforcement efforts.”They often work together to take down the bad guys. And when they're not doing that, they're proactively following fundraising drives. “Do we see exorbitant amounts of money going to professional fundraisers- do we see big upticks in the salaries that the leaders of the charity are making,” Fuchs said.They look for ways in which people are being taken advantage of. So, how do you know who's good and who's not? Enter organizations like Charity Navigator. “We’re a database with all of the registered nonprofits in the United States,” said Michael Thatcher, President, and CEO of Charity Navigator. Thatcher says the company has grown to be the largest independent evaluator of nonprofits in the country. Basically, they give you all the tools you need to make the right decisions when it comes to donations.“Never charge the donor for access to the information and never charge the charities to be evaluated so you eliminate any potential conflict of interest,” Thatcher said If you're looking to give this year, he recommends focusing on how the organization is run, how they're making a difference in the world. Review their financial data, and ask questions - lots of questions. "How have they pivoted around COVID and how have they stayed true to their mission and also stayed in business?" Thatcher added.NASCO recommends you do extensive research. And be specific about the "cause" you want to support. “Where is my money going- how will it be used? What we always want people to remember is you don’t want to give to a buzzword you’re not just giving to a cause you’re giving to a particular charity so you want to be able to trust that charity to understand what their programs are.” The need will be big this year. Every death seems to prompt a discussion on ways to prevent these tragedies by reminding drivers of their precious backseat cargo.Safety advocates have just scored a win as automaker Nissan announced plans Tuesday to make rear door alerts standard in eight vehicle types by model year 2019.The system will notify drivers if the rear door was opened before a trip but not reopened after the car is parked and the ignition is turned off, with an initial display in the instrument panel and a series of discrete honks. Nissan aims to have the rear door alerts in all four-door trucks, sedans and SUVs by model year 2022, the company said in a statement. 775

The coronavirus is only the sixth time a global health emergency has been declared.Compared to the previous five emergencies, experts say the coronavirus pandemic is easily the most severe.Here in the United States, we’re still far behind when it comes to recovery. Health security experts at Johns Hopkins University say we have seen some success in treating the virus, but there hasn't been much success in responding to it, especially when it comes to testing.“Many states did not invest in testing and many states did not invest in contact tracers, so when you see cases spiral out of control in certain states, it's not surprising to me,” Dr. Amesh Adalja of Johns Hopkins University said. “That's exactly the recipe you would set up if you wanted cases to rise.”Dr. Adalja says in order to tackle the spread of the virus, the US needs to prioritize testing, tracing and isolating.Health experts across the country have also signed a letter calling on the US to shut down the country and start over. The letter includes a list of recommendations for what's needed before cities can reopen. It calls for enhanced testing capabilities, more contact tracers and more personal protective equipment.Dr. Bill Hanage at Harvard University was one of those who signed the letter, and says safely reopening can happen, “If we look at countries like New Zealand, South Korea, then you can actually see that it is possible with sustained action to shut down, strangle the virus, throw it back to the sea, and then you can open with substantial amounts of normal economy.”Hanage adds that while it can be done, it's yet to be seen if the US is capable of doing this.The Association of American Medical Colleges has also offered a road map that would change the country's approach to the pandemic. TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) -- Mexican authorities said a Chula Vista woman and her friend were gunned down at a family gathering in Tijuana. Investigators said the suspect is a Tijuana firefighter who shot at the two during a jealous rage.The victim was identified as 32-year-old Roxana Diaz."She was always smiling, she was kind of crazy," said Diaz' cousin Ivett Corral. "A happy lady."Tijuana investigators said Diaz went to visit a family friend, 39-year-old Carlos Roberto Trujillo, in Tijuana Aug. 15. They and another female friend met with several Tijuana firefighters at a get-together.Early the next morning, the three friends headed to Trujillo's home at Colonia Union. Police said the three firefighters ambushed the group, shooting at Trujillo and Diaz, and kidnapping the other woman.Trujillo died just outside his home. Diaz underwent surgery at Tijuana General Hospital but died Aug. 20 after she was transferred to UCSD Medical Center. "I start crying a lot because she was like a sister to me," Corral said. "She was more than a cousin. We grew up together."Police said after the firefighters kidnapped the woman, she screamed for help at a toll plaza on the way to Ensenada. Officers were alerted and arrested the firefighters.Mexican investigators said the alleged shooter, identified only as 27-year-old Ricardo N., is the boyfriend of the woman he and his co-workers kidnapped. They said he was jealous that she was socializing with her ex-boyfriend Trujillo and Diaz.Corral said Diaz was a long-time employee at Kentucky Fried Chicken on 3rd Street in Chula Vista. She worked hard to provide for her 16-year-old son.Trujillo's family said he worked at the Tijuana Town Hall. He leaves behind three children."We just want justice," Corral said. Trujillo's family told 10News the suspects are being held in Ensenada on suspicion of kidnapping but have not been charged with the murders of Trujillo and Diaz.
