SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind. We're all equally happy for the same benefits, and moving forward it's a great thing to know that everyone coming on we're all gonna have that same equal benefit." 1671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An East San Diego County military wife whose husband is accused of poisoning her with thallium is facing intensive rehabilitation, according to a GoFundMe account in her name.Race Uto, 27, was arrested in March on suspicion of giving his wife Brigida the heavy metal, which is found in rat poison and ant killers.A search warrant obtained by 10News indicated Brigida Uto had been sick since September 2017 and did not know the cause. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wifeDoctors determined Brigida ingested the Thallium, which was found in ‘extreme levels’ in her system when she was admitted to the hospital.The FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning caseRace told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An autopsy report released Friday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner indicated a young woman who died after being arrested by San Diego Police had PCP, THC, morphine, and meth in her system. The Medical Examiner determined Aleah Jenkins, 24, died of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest while in custody and acute methamphetamine and fentanyl toxicity. Jenkins was arrested during a traffic stop in University City on Nov. 27. Officers determined she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for meth possession and arrested her. They also found a bag of methamphetamine in the car, according to the autopsy report. During the traffic stop, police called paramedics because Jenkins vomited. She said it was due to an upset stomach, and officers said they canceled the ambulance call. RELATED: San Diego woman dies in the hospital after arrestJenkins was taken to SDPD headquarters, where police went to get water for her, the autopsy indicated. When the officers returned, they found Jenkins unresponsive. There was a bag of white powder on the ground near her, and a glass vial and another bag of white powder in her clothing, the autopsy report said. The Medical Examiner’s report indicated the officers administered CPR, and she had a pulse when paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital Jenkins died at UC San Diego Medical Center on Dec. 6. The Medical Examiner’s autopsy summary indicated Jenkins had no injuries which would have contributed to her death.
