SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Star Trek fans got the surprise of a lifetime at Comic-Con Hall H Saturday, as many A-List stars made unannounced appearances. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. Fans were near tears and more than grateful to see his reprisal of the iconic role."It sounds like he rejected a lot of scripts before he was like, 'Yes this is something that I would like to be involved in," Star Trek fan, Monica Marion said.Fans also got to meet the show's new faces, including Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. Then came the three surprise guests: Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco, and Jeri Ryan. The three are also reprising their roles from "Star Trek: Next Generation" for "Star Trek: Picard"."We haven't seen Data in 15 years or so except in reruns, so it's like oh my God my old friend!" Star Trek fan, Dale Bankhead said."The possibility of standing next to Patrick on a set again was more than what I could say no to," Brent Spiner, who plays "Lt. Commander Data," said. Some lucky fans even got to meet the living legend at an autograph signing. "He is absolutely amazing. He is so iconic. He is an amazing actor and an amazing person!" Star Trek fan, Monique Vapnik said. "He's really humble and has a really cool vibe about him," Star Trek, Ammar Abbas said. Stewart left the crowd with a line from the new show- a poignant reminder of the 79-year old's prolific career."'We never know, do we? When our last moment will be.' For me, I can twist that a little and say, 'We never know, do we? When our BEST moment will be,' and that is now!" 2261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- For the first time in decades, NASA is moving closer to sending people to the moon, or even Mars. Naval Base San Diego is playing a key role in that process. This week the USS John P. Murtha left Naval Base San Diego to test recovery efforts of NASA’s mock Orion capsule.“We’re going to ensure that once it comes down, once it hits that water, that everything from then on is totally safe,” says Retired Navy Pilot and President of the San Diego Air & Space Museum Jim Kidrick. The amphibious ship sends a crew into the Pacific Ocean, then uses smaller boats to guide the capsule back to the USS Murtha. The Orion has an environmental control system, a heat shield that can withstand 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, radiation control and parachutes. NASA says the first recovery test aboard the USS Murtha was a success.“By the time they put people in that capsule its going to work flawlessly.” Naval Base San Diego will be removing the Orion test model from the USS Murtha and putting in on display tomorrow.10News will be there to give you a personal look at the capsule. 1095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As the heat wave continues across San Diego County, businesses operating outside are forced to deal with another challenge during this pandemic. While the county has been removed from the state’s monitoring list, no guidance on reopening businesses has been provided, so many continue to work outside.“It’s super-hot,” said Elise Ha, owner of Master Hair & Nails in Ramona. By noon the temperature had reached over 100 degrees, causing discomfort for employees, and slowing down her business.“Not everybody can handle the heat,” she said “It’s brutal.”Ha said working in the heat is a new struggle businesses are facing, especially having to move equipment back and forth to set up outside every day.“I almost fainted because of the heat,” she said. “I can’t wait to back inside.”For now she's using wet towels to cool down and offering cold water to clients.ABC 10News spotted utility workers in Alpine using umbrellas to shield themselves from the scorching sun as temperatures continued to climb Tuesday. The high heat and humidity is making things uncomfortable across the county and the dry fuel causing concerns of fire danger, still some are managing to get by.“We still get a rush,” said Carlos Legaspi, a cook at Tapatio Mexican Grill in Alpine. “We get a lot of city workers and construction workers and stuff that come in for lunch.”Legaspi said the restaurant owners moved tables outdoors before it was required by the state as a safety precaution. While it may be uncomfortable currently, he said things have been running smoothly and the employees have adapted to the changes.“It’s super hot, it’s like 100 degrees right now,” he said before noon Tuesday. “People are kind of used to it now.”As the heat wave continues, SDG&E is urging everyone to limit energy use to avoid power outages. You can do your part by turning off unnecessary lights, precooling your home early in the day, and setting your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher in the afternoon. 1997
