PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Videos posted online appear to show a man punched and kicked unconscious by demonstrators just blocks away from a peaceful protest in Portland, Oregon. News outlets report the man had been driving a truck that crashed downtown Sunday night. Afterward, the man is seen sitting in the street. A video showed the man apparently being punched and kicked in the head by demonstrators.A police spokesperson told The Oregonian that the man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. According to The Oregonian, some people tried to hold the assailants back, while others rummaged through the man's truck.A peaceful protest took place blocks away outside a U.S. courthouse. PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Officials in Prairie Village say a garbage truck crashed into a house in Prairie Village Wednesday morning. Police said the driver fell out of the truck after turning onto Cedar Street from 83rd Terrace. The truck continued to roll and smashed into the corner of a home's garage.The homeowners were home at the time but were uninjured. A spokeswoman at Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the trash truck driver remains in critical condition."I opened the front door and the truck was barreling across my grass and all the sudden it hit and we shook,” said the homeowner, Rick Evrard.Michael Yates was remodeling a kitchen at a home across the street when he heard the crash.“All the sudden I heard the boom,” said Yates, “That’s when I looked out the window and I saw the truck was inside the house over there and the fellow was laying on the ground.”The man lying on the ground was the driver. Yates and Evrard ran to him to see if they could help him.“We got towels. He was bleeding profusely from his head,” said Evrard.Evrard was told his house is uninhabitable for the time being.The truck also clipped a gas meter and the gas was shut off for repairs.  1223

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his promised tariffs on steel and aluminum imports -- 25% on steel, 10% on aluminum -- would be applied in a "very loving way."But at least a few states might not be feeling it.Despite Trump's adverting the tariffs as a worker protection, many businesses in states that carried him in the election, including manufacturers in the Rust Belt region, rely heavily on steel and aluminum imports, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution. Brookings analyzed how reliant states are on aluminum and steel imports as a share of total state imports.Louisiana, one of the largest importers, relies on steel and aluminum imports to support its oil and gas industries. Already, Royal Dutch Shell has said a tariff could affect its decision to develop a planned Gulf of Mexico project.Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker warned the tariffs could hurt the state's canning and beer industries.Ohio has about 11,400 workers directly employed in steel and aluminum production but 410,300 in industries that use steel and aluminum, according to Crain's Cleveland. States with these kinds of imbalances could experience greater secondhand effects than they do in benefits.According to the Brookings report, four Rust Belt states -- Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- receive 20% of the nation's total steel and aluminum imports, much of it going to Michigan's automotive and metalworking clusters. Several automotive stocks were down 2% or more after Trump's initial announcement.The Rust Belt also relies heavily on NAFTA-enabled trade with Canada and Mexico, which could be jeopardized in a trade war. Nearly 70% of US exports to Canada and Mexico are from the Rust Belt, according to Brookings.Kentucky and South Carolina, which are also home to auto manufacturing plants, are at risk from the tariffs. It could also have broader employment effects in states like South Carolina, where imports arrive. One in every 11 jobs in South Carolina depends on the state's four seaports --187,000 jobs, according to a report by CNN Money's Patrick Gillespie.The tariffs could also have broader impacts in blue states that ultimately affect one issue the President has sworn to protect: defense. PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Bundled up and armed with long lenses, an intimate crowd of naturalists, rehabbers and bird enthusiasts gathered in Virginia on Election Day, ready for a glimpse at America's national symbol."It has been the national symbol since the 1780s, but it hasn't always been treated with much respect," said Ed Clark, President of The Wildlife Center of Virginia.The eagle, which made his way to the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth Tuesday, is a solid 8 pounds, has a 6-foot wing span and is being labeled majestic and mysterious."They really are the flagship species of the natural world and we almost lost them," said Clark.This regal eagle found himself in a scuffle in Suffolk in August with another bird, but was thankfully rescued by a private citizen."Fights are pretty benign but this one banged up and he had soft tissue injuries," Clark said.The beautiful bald eagle has been undergoing treatment at the Wildlife Center of Virginia for the past two months."We are delighted to return him to the area in which he came from and give him another chance," said Clark.Clark says bald eagles are no longer on the endangered species list, and went on to note that there are more than 2,000 pairs in the commonwealth and more than 1,500 nests in the Tidewater region."The bald eagle is one of the greatest conservation success stories we have in North America," he said.The icon is a symbol of courage, strength and freedom, taking the popular vote with eager onlookers."Alright everybody, one, two, three," shouted Clark before launching the bird over Lake Ballard."To be able to send him back to wild lets us be comforted no matter how divided we are as a people or polarized, we are all American's, " said Clark.This story was originally published by Chelsea Donovan at WKTR. 1812
