The House on Thursday passed a health care package that included several bipartisan bills to lower drug costs, but without the support of most Republicans because it also included legislation to strengthen Obamacare. The vote was 234-183. Five Republicans voted to approve the package.Republican representatives, most of whom would have likely supported the drug pricing bills if they were brought up alone, cried foul, saying Democratic leaders had attached the Obamacare legislation as a poison pill that forced a tough vote for the GOP."Instead of delivering a victory for the American people today -- making prescription drugs more affordable -- Democrats are back at it, playing gotcha politics," said Energy and Commerce Committee Republican leader Greg Walden of Oregon.Democrats, meanwhile, argued they were simply delivering on their campaign promises to lower drug costs while bolstering Obamacare and protecting those with preexisting conditions. The Senate is not expected to take up the legislation. While the two parties have been working together on measures to address drug costs, House Democrats are also seeking to reverse many of Trump administration's moves to undermine the Affordable Care Act.The goal of the drug price bills is to make it easier for generic medication to come to market by ending some of the roadblocks that brand name manufacturers erect. For instance, it would ban brand name drug makers from paying generic rivals to delay bringing their lower-cost products to market and would make it easier for generic drug makers to get the samples they need to make their versions. But the legislation would also reverse President Donald Trump's extension of short-term insurance plans, which don't have to adhere to all of Obamacare's rules, so they can reject people with preexisting conditions or charge them higher premiums. The administration last year made these policies more attractive by extending their terms to just under a year, instead of three months. Also included is a measure to restore funding for outreach and assistance during Obamacare's open enrollment period that the President has slashed since taking office. The drug reform bills passed the committee with unanimous bipartisan votes, but the Obamacare provisions were approved on strict party-line votes, according to a senior Republican House aide. The White House also took issue with the combined bills, noting in a statement of administration policy that it contains "positive steps called for by the President to lower drug prices" but also measures that would limit Americans' health insurance choices and coverage. White House advisors would recommend the President veto the bill if it remains in its current form.Thursday's vote comes a week after 2768

The Miami Dolphins waived second-year running back Mark Walton after he was arrested Tuesday morning, with police accusing him of repeatedly punching the mother of his unborn child in the face.An officer responded to a residence in the Miami suburb of Davie around 4:15 a.m. and learned that Walton had been in an argument with a woman, according to a police report. The woman was five weeks pregnant, the report said, and had told Walton on Sunday that the child was his."During the course of the argument, Walton pushed (the woman) against a wall and punched her several times in the face and head. I observed (the woman) to have swelling on her left eye," the responding Davie officer wrote in his report. The victim's name was redacted in the report.Walton is charged with aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, the report says. Walton remained in the Broward County Jail, pending a Wednesday hearing that would determine his bond status.Walton's attorney, Michael Gottlieb, said he spoke with his client Tuesday. He told CNN, "I don't believe Mr. Walton is guilty of the charges as alleged."In a statement, the Dolphins said they waived Walton."We were made aware of a police matter earlier this morning regarding Mark Walton," Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said. "We hold our players to a high standard and take these matters very seriously. We will have no further comment at this time."The Cincinnati Bengals selected Walton, who played at the University of Miami, in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The CDC released updated figures on Friday of measles cases in the United States so far in 2019, indicating this year marks the highest level of measles cases in the U.S. since 1992. Despite the rise of measles in recent years, the CDC still considers measles eliminated in the U.S. The CDC says that measles elimination means the absence of continuous disease transmission for 12 months or more in a specific geographic area. The CDC said that the majority of cases involved large and close-knit Orthodox Jewish communities in New York, which accounted for 75 percent of cases during 2019. These cases threatened the elimination status of measles in the United States.During January 1–October 1, 2019, a total of 1,249 measles cases, according to CDC. Of the 1,249 cases, 89 percent were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status."Undervaccinated, close-knit communities are not unique to the United States and exist around the world," the CDC said in a release. "These communities are at high risk for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, which threaten the health and safety of vulnerable persons within, as well as outside of, these communities. "Therefore, public health authorities need to identify pockets of undervaccinated persons to prevent these outbreaks, which require substantial resources to control. A preventive strategy to build vaccine confidence is important, especially one that uses culturally appropriate communication strategies to offset misinformation and disseminate accurate information about the safety and importance of vaccination in advance of outbreaks." 1614

The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases released concerning information that only 52 percent of adults in the U.S. plan to get vaccinated during the upcoming flu season. The organization said on Thursday that it urges everyone 6 months of age or older to get vaccinated for the flu as soon as possible. "Many people underestimate the severity of flu, yet we know flu causes hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar, II. "When it comes to protecting people from flu, our best preventive tool is an annual flu vaccine. It can safely prevent flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths," added Secretary Azar. Getting vaccinated is especially important for people with chronic health conditions that puts them at higher risk for flu-related complications."Last flu season, approximately 93 percent of adults hospitalized for flu-related complications had at least one underlying medical condition, such as heart or lung disease. Vaccination against flu and pneumococcal disease must be part of disease management for people with chronic health conditions," said Dr. Borden, a preventive cardiology specialist. Those looking for a flu vaccine can click 1291
