CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer stabbed while on duty will be awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery. On July 27, Officer David Sachs will be awarded the badge by United States Attorney for the Southern District of California Robert Brewer. The award, created in 2008, honors exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty. On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress.After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners.The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck.After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. After more officers arrived, medical aid was given to the hospital who was taken to the hospital where he later died.Sachs was stabbed six times. Following seven months of recovery, he returned to full-duty and is still serving today.In May of 2018, Sachs was awarded a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart by the Chula Vista Police Department. 2141

(KGTV) - A Chula Vista mom says she was left holding the bag when her son's school wouldn't let her drop of her his lunch, which was needed for medical reasons.Adriana Escodbedo says the fruit, veggies, and turkey sandwich she packed for her 13-year-old son Danny on Thursday served a purpose. Early that morning, he was at the hospital getting an injection for a medical condition. Though he had some food afterward, his lunch period at Eastlake Middle School wasn't for another six hours."It's recommended they have something in their stomachs if they're getting injected with this medication," said Escobedo.RELATED: Parents concerned with short lunch times at San Diego Unified schoolsAfter Escobedo dropped him off at school, she discovered that Danny - for the first time ever - left his lunch in the car. Hours later, she went back to the school to drop it off and went to the main office."I let the two women in the office know that he took medication that day," said Escobedo.Escobedo say she wasn't allowed to drop off the lunch, but could set up an account in the cafeteria. Escobedo declined, as Danny has food sensitivities."As a mom, I just felt so frustrated. Are you kidding me? She checked her son out of the school, walked off campus, handed him the lunch, and then checked him back into the school.10News reached out to the Sweetwater Union High School District. A spokesperson says the policy is spelled out in the school handbook. The years-old policy came about because too many lunch drop-offs ended up sapping school resources and creating concerns about food spoilage. The district says there are exceptions - including medical reasons - but in this case, Escobedo didn't bring up the health issues, which she says is not true. She says staff should be trained to know the policy and any exceptions."As a mom you just want to do what's best for your child," said Escobedo.The district spokesperson tells 10News:"the front office staff will make an exception based on the situation and only on a limited basis ... the staff members who spoke with the parent said that they offered to call the student out of class so that they could give the student their lunch. The parent did not seem pleased with the responses she was being given and left. Had the parent asked for more clarification, or asked to speak with a school administrator, we could have very easily resolved this matter. Our staff also said that the parent made no mention of health/dietary issues, because again, this would have enabled staff to make an exception in this case.Nutrition is vital to student success which is why we offer a variety of options and all of them healthy and meet state nutritional guidelines. Even if a student does not have an active account, our school never deny a student a meal and the meals we provide would be the same as for a student with an active account ... If parents do have a medical/dietary concern, we ask that they let us know. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three gang members charged in a violent crime spree that stretched from San Ysidro to La Jolla were in court Tuesday in Chula Vista for their preliminary exam. Michael Pedraza, Cesar Alvarado, and Britney Canal are accused of murdering a South Bay businessman last April and kidnapping and shooting a woman who witnessed it. Mya Hendrix was the first took take the stand. She's paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair after being shot three times and left to die at Sunset Cliffs. The judge would not allow the media to show the faces of the defendants in court, but they smirked during much of testimony. Hendrix, 19, said she was friends with the defendants and had done drugs with some of them. She says they turned on her because they thought she stole a backpack with ,500 in it. Hendrix says they kidnapped her, tortured her with a game of Russian Roulette and tased her multiple times. At one point, she testified she was forced to call her mom for ransom money. “I told her I needed ,500. My life depended on it and she was asking me why, and I was forced to say that I had robbed somebody. I wasn’t allowed to say that people had thought I took something from them, they forced me and tased me told me to say that I robbed them," said Hendrix. Prosecutors said the trio drove Hendrix to various locations. "They were telling me they were going to put me into sex trafficking. They were telling me they were selling me to this guy they had at the park. They had me like tied up in this garage with duct tape over my mouth and they were tasing me in front of people," said Hendrix. Prosecutors say Hendrix was in the backseat when the defendants shot and killed a South Bay businessman. According to investigators, the suspects thought 59-year-old Mario Serhan was an undercover cop who was following them. The defendants are charged with fatally shooting him in the head. Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his car with a gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle was coasting through the intersection of Industrial Blvd. and L Street before it collided with a storage business, police said. Hendrix testified that the trio celebrated the killing. "Ms. Canal was excited. She was like, "good shot babe" cause he was like, "I got him in the dome," testified Hendrix. She said the defendants cleaned the car with bleach to remove any gun powder residue. Shortly after, she says they took her to Sunset Cliffs and tried to murder her. "I walked down the stairs with the gun pointed at me the whole time, pleading for my life, crying he told me to take it with some dignity and not to die like a little *&^%$ and that’s when he shot me the first time, which the bullet hit my ear and I stayed standing. The second time is the one that went in my neck and out of my chest on this side that’s the one where I fell and broke my spinal cord and then as he was walking away he turned around and shot me a third time in the hip. All I could do was lay there and pray," testified Hendrix. She was found hours later near the surf by tourists at Sunset Cliffs. A fourth defendant, Francisco Aranda, is also charged in the case. He's accused of setting Hendrix up. Hendrix says she thought they were friends, but Aranda believed she had stolen from him. Testimony continues Wednesday morning. A judge will decide if there is enough evidence for this case to go to trial. 3431

(KGTV) - A growing number of San Diego County high school students are being recruited to act as drug mules for Mexican cartels, the U.S. Attorney for San Diego said Tuesday.The most recent charges were filed against Philip Junior Webb, a former student at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. Federal prosecutors accuse Webb of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and bringing in unlawful aliens, including a Mexican national and Chinese national, for financial gain.“We are seeing a very troubling trend and we want to warn parents and high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Sherri Walker Hobson.According to court documents, Webb was a high school senior who recruited other students to smuggle methamphetamine and Fentanyl into the United States on multiple occasions.On each occasion, the juveniles had drugs strapped on their bodies as they attempted to enter the United States, investigators said.“This is a dangerous trend because this is no longer a situation where it’s the guy with the tattoos on the corner parking lot recruiting people to do drug deals. This is someone who is one of the students. He’s one of the students. He could be your lab partner. He could be the guy next door. He could be the girl next door in the school locker area,” said Walker Hobson.Webb is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.In an unrelated incident, another high school student was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine at San Ysidro High School.  Agents said they found five kilograms of methamphetamine in the student’s back seat. 1595

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Pastor Art Hodges stood on the steps of Chula Vista City Hall Wednesday, surrounded by about 50 people of faith. "Hear our prayer. Forgive our sin," Hodges said during the group prayer.The people were rallying against a program that calls for drag queens to read to children. Drag Queen Story Hour is scheduled to start Tuesday at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. At the rally, those opposing the program said it would harm a child's growth and development. They also demanded public hearings."If there are parents that want drag queens to come read books to their children, they have that right. They're the parents, we're not protesting their right," said Hodges. "But they should do that privately, on their own time, in their own place, on their own dollar."Supporters say the program promotes tolerance and acceptance. Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas called it "preposterous" to have a City Council vote for a one-hour reading program, which she said would not be canceled. "The City of Chula Vista is proud to celebrate the diversity of our community in all of our programs," Salas said in a statement. "The purpose of this event is to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity and most importantly to read."The tone of Wednesday's rally was much different than one held last week, in which tempers flared from the start. This time, only a handful of Drag Queen Story Hour supporters watched the rally from the side. Supporter Shelley Rudd, a retired teacher, said the drag queen reading program benefits children. "I think that it really helps those children who may be questioning, an opportunity to see that there are options and that it's okay," Rudd said. Last week, a different rally organized by a group called Mass Resistance got heated, with police stepping between both sides on two separate occasions.
