JT Lewis, the brother of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting, is running for Connecticut state senate. He'll be challenging Republican state Sen. Tony Hwang, who is in his third term representing the state's 28th district -- which includes Newtown, where the massacre took place. In his campaign video, which was released on Monday, Lewis said he and his mom reached out to Hwang to "help prevent future tragedies" but never heard back."On December 14, 2012, a shooter entered my brother's classroom, fired bullets until the gun jammed," Lewis says in the video. "Jesse yelled for his classmates to run, while he stood behind to defend his teacher. Nine of his friends ran, Jesse is credited with saving nine lives."Lewis says in the video he's running for senate to honor his little brother who lost his life."I share his story because I believe that inside every single one of us is that same innate courage we never even knew we had, to do something extraordinary." 1007

It's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and there's a new push to keep roads safer. In Tennessee, the state with the highest levels of distracted-driving deaths in the country, police have taken a unique approach to catching distracted drivers. Officers are riding on city buses and watching drivers around them, catching ones on their phones and then calling for backup to pull them over. "This is distracted driving week throughout the United States, and so this week, we're spending time working on our roadways to bring attention to our drivers about this type of behavior that we're trying to stop," explains Steve Dillard with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. In California, drivers can be issued a ticket for just holding your phone behind the wheel, even at a traffic stop. Now, the National Transportation Safety Board is pushing the state to take it a step further and become the first to ban hands-free calls, saying it can still cause drivers to be distracted. But are hands-free devices really a distraction? An instructor with the MasterDrive driving school in Denver, Colorado says hands-free technology still takes the driver’s focus away from driving their vehicle. “While you're looking at your screens and trying to figure out which button to push, the cars in motion,” the instructor says. “The car is not being driven by you at that point, and at any point, things could happen.”Distracted driving claimed more than 3,000 lives in 2017 alone. 1495

Lawyers for the Department of Justice plan to tell a federal judge in Maryland Friday afternoon that the Trump administration will continue to explore options of adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census, according to an administration official familiar with the plans. The official stressed that as of now the census will be printed without the citizenship question.Earlier Friday, President Donald Trump said he is considering his options which include a potential executive order, or an addendum to the questionnaire that would allow the question to be added at a later date. Such a move could require the administration to provide a new justification for the addition of the question, following a Supreme Court ruling requiring a new rationale. The move by the Justice Department would mean that the administration will face daunting legal challenges and a tenuous timeline. Judge George Hazel in Maryland had told the Justice Department that if the administration refused to definitively say it will not add a citizenship question to the census, he would establish a schedule to hear new evidence over the next 45 days. A parallel proceeding will continue in New York as well.Growing frustrated at his administration's handling of 1253

In an age where you can essentially look up anything on the internet, the New York Public Library is helping people find answers to their questions the old-fashioned way: books.Deep inside one of the largest libraries in the world, beyond the glitz of its famous reading rooms, sits a man who helps answer a variety questions from visitors. On this particular day, one visitor wants to know who Dr. Seuss’ favorite character from his book is.Bernard van Maarseveen is like a human search engine, often referred to as "the human Google." Instead of scouring the internet for answers, he descends into the depths of the libraries research stacks, looking for a needle in a haystack of 53 million books. Van Maarseveen, assistant manager of the “Ask New York Public Library” program, gets calls and emails on infinite subject matter, usually from people who fall into a few categories. "Mostly, it's those who can’t look things up in Google, so it would be, tends to be, seniors,” he says. “Sometimes students doing a class assignment, sometimes people for whatever reason don't have internet connection.” He says scanning the shelves, knowing he might make someone's day, is one of the best parts of his job.As for the answer to a visitor’s Dr. Seuss question, van Maarseveen finds a book with the answer: Lorax. 1322
