BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's civil affairs ministers visited survivors of last year's 7.1-magnitude Yushu earthquake and Zhouqu mudslide prior to China's lunar new year.Dou Yupei, vice minister of Civil Affairs, led a team to Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province to visit quake survivors and local cadres beginning on Sunday.Dou told Xinhua that quake survivors in Yushu now had access to food, clothing, safe drinking water, shelters and medical services, and the reconstruction of quake-damaged houses was well underway.Further, the ministry has distributed 45,000 cotton-padded tents to Yushu to house survivors during the extremely cold winter on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.So far, 160,000 tents have been set up to assure that all survivors have a roof overhead, according to the ministry's statement issued Wednesday.Yushu was jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14, leaving 2,200 people dead and 220,000 local residents affected.Another vice minister, Sun Shaocheng, visited survivors from a massive mudslide that left 1,700 people dead or missing in Zhouqu, Gansu province.To provide warm shelters to survivors, the Zhouqu county government invested three million yuan (455,000 U.S. Dollars) in renovating vacant school buildings or installing facilities in newly-built apartments.All survivors who previously had taken shelter in make-shift tents were relocated to these buildings before Oct. 13, according to the ministry's statement.

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Italian archaeologists are digging the remains of Lisa Gherardini, a 16th-century woman who is widely believed to be the model for the famous portrait Mona Lisa, AFP reported on Wednesday.The team of historians say they will try to find the remains using geo-radar equipment and then try to re-create a likeness of what the woman, Lisa Gherardini, would have looked like to compare her to Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa.Gherardini (1479-1542), also known by her married name as Lisa del Giocondo, was the wife of a Florentine silk merchant and is widely believed to have been the model for the  portrait that now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.But the issue has never been settled definitively and mystery still shrouds the model's enigmatic expression and other details of the portrait.

BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China's retailers will offer refund to recent buyers of iPad 1 as price dropped with the debut of iPad 2.Apple released the upgraded version of the tablet on March 3 and announced to lower the price tags of the first generation iPad 1 by up to 27.6 percent. Buyers of iPad 1 within the last two weeks are eligible for a price difference compensation, according to Apple.Chinese customers who bought the product via Apple China online or its chain stores will also be compensated, according to a statement on Apple's website.Chinese electronics retailers such as Suning and Gome responded quickly to the price cut, promising to pay back their customers with a refund.Suning, China's biggest electronics retailer by market value, said iPad 1 buyers who bought the product from Feb 17 to March 2 can get the refund with the receipt starting Saturday.Gome, the second largest electronics retailer in China, also announced to pay back their customers who bought the product from Feb 18 to March 3 from their stores. MOHE, Heilongjiang, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Some 1.318 million tonnes of crude oil had flowed through an oil pipeline from Russia's far-east to China by Jan. 31, a month after the pipeline began operating, an officer of the Chinese operator of the pipeline said.The pipeline, which originates in the Russian town of Skovorodino in the far-eastern Amur region, enters China at Mohe and terminates at Daqing City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.The facility withstood the test of the severe coldness since it was put into operation on Jan. 1 and no production accident has been reported so far, said Gou Hanghai, director of the Mohe administration station of the pipeline.The pipeline remains a daily oil delivering capacity of 42,000 tonnes, he saidThe 1,000-km-long pipeline will transport 15 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia to China per year from 2011 to 2030, according to an agreement signed between the two countries.Some 72 kilometers of the pipeline is in Russia and 927 kilometers of it is in China.

TOKYO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Traces of radioactive iodine had been detected in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto region, according to the results of an investigation of radioactivity in precipitation and dust conducted by the government, local media reported on Sunday.Radioactive iodine was found in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Yamanashi, Tochigi and Gunma prefectures, the Kyodo News said, citing the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
