SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent restaurant closures are highlighting some of the struggles owners are facing as the industry grapples with major shifts in the way it does business.Last month, Brooklyn Girl in Mission Hills and Urban Solace in North Park both closed their doors. And for one reason or another they're just stumped," says Stephen Zolezzi, the President and CEO of the Food and Beverage Association of San Diego.His association tracks the total number of licenses given out in San Diego to food and beverage vendors. Zolezzi says over the last three years, there's been an increase of 300 licenses. The prices of rent, insurance, and goods have all gone up in the past year. There are also higher labor costs because of minimum wage hikes and low unemployment creating favorable hiring conditions for employees.But cost isn't the only factor."Customer loyalty, today, is really at a low," says Zolezzi. His members say diners now would rather go to multiple places once than become regular, dependable customers at a few spots."You could be doing everything right," he says. Zolezzi says these apps can charge restaurants as much as 30% of the total bill, plus delivery fees, to carry their food. That cuts into already razor-thin margins and in some cases cause restaurants to lose money on each delivery order."If you don't have that factored into your business plan, it could create a negative," he says.Zolezzi says it's now up to the industry to adapt, as restaurant owners need to constantly reinvent their location, menu, and marketing to bring in more customers. 2568
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday.The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said. “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes.The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local high school teacher is using her classroom to foster conversations about social justice. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller.With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course.It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. "I just wanted to start the new school year with ultimately the most relevant and interesting materials for the kids in my class."Students taking the Literature and Social Justice course will receive high school credit and credit towards admission to CSU and University of California schools. 1964
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego brewery is helping locals who find themselves in the kitchen more during California's stay at home order try their hands at bread making.Mission Brewery is offering small bags of dried yeast for free to community members in need."As a bread baker myself, I realized that yeast has become almost impossible to find on grocery shelves because of the COVID-19 crisis," says Mission Brewery owner Dan Selis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of women is trying to appeal the decision by a judge to release the 'Bolder than Most' rapist, Alvin Quarles. Quarles is set to be released in Jacumba Hot Springs by Nov. 30. The women, including two of his victims, created a petition called Your Voice has Power. They are collecting signatures to be delivered to District Attorney Summer Stephan's office. Cynthia Medina and Mary Taylor were both assaulted by Quarles in the late 1980s. They are worried that he will re-offend when he's released. "He will re-offend. I fear for your daughter, your sister, your grandmother, your mother, your boyfriend, your son," said Medina. Judge David Gill ordered the 56-year-old's release at a hearing on October 12th. He will be forced to wear a GPS tracker. Quarles earned his nickname because authorities said he attacked women at knifepoint while they slept and often forced his victim's male partner to watch or participate in the sex crimes. Jacumba Hot Springs residents call the release outrageous, saying it's not the first time a sexual predator has been released into their community. "It's become the junkyard for these terrible criminals. It's like setting off a bunch of wild tigers out in the community," said Alice Keyser, a 15-year resident. Summer Stephan has gone on record saying that she disagrees with the judge's decision and that her office is looking at all options to reverse Quarles' release.
