DEL MAR (KGTV) — A historic summer season at the Del Mar racetrack is wrapping up Monday, the first season without fans in the stands in the track’s history.But even with all the changes forced by the pandemic, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says summer 2020 was a success.With no fans in attendance, the Thoroughbred Club says it missed out on about million in concessions and other on-track revenue this season. In July, the track canceled a weekend of racing after 15 jockeys and seven other workers tested positive for COVID-19.Last weekend, a horse was hurt during racing and had to be put down, the first death during racing at Del Mar since 2018.“To only have one in two racing seasons is a phenomenal number and we will definitely be the safest track in North America, as we have been the last two years,” Dado said.Dado attributed the track’s safety record to protocols adopted three years ago.But there are still questions about the kinds of pandemic protocols that will be in place when the November season begins.“At this point, we have no idea what’s going to happen in November,” he said. “Things are starting to open up in San Diego County. DENVER, Co. – The Durans' home is a family treasure. It’s been passed down through three generations. “My grandparents started this house and he finished it,” said Linda Duran of her father, Gerald Duran. “You name it, I did it,” laughed the Korean War Veteran about the hundreds of hours he’s poured into the family home over the years. This home not only represents a wonderful building achievement, but it’s a place where laughter and memories have been shared every single day. Stories of war, stories about school days and all that life brings in between. As their family grew, the home expanded. “I built this, I built that,” said Gerald pointing around the property. “With help, you know, you cannot do anything without help.” This year, Linda and her dad found their family needing a little help with their home once again. “There were a lot of things that needed work and especially, the safety,” said Linda. The outside doors didn’t close or lock, and the kitchen didn’t have working appliances. But COVID-19 made those repairs impossible to pay for after Linda lost her job. “Can't do anything anymore hardly,” said Gerald. “I want to go to bingo. No, I ain't got no money. Got to buy groceries. That's what's hard. That's what gets hard.” “You're not able to do the things you used to be able to do afford, because being on a fixed income and no income is detrimental,” said Linda. So, she reached out for help. “It’s an awful feeling because I’m not no spring chicken, so I just feel like, ‘Gosh at this point in my life, I should be able to help him more than I am,’” said Linda. A nonprofit called Rebuilding Together answered her prayers. The nationwide group connects contractors and volunteers willing to donate work and supplies for critical home repairs in their own communities. “The majority of people we help are older Americans, veterans or people with disabilities, and so they’re supposed to stay at home and shelter at home, and it’s kind of hard to do that if it’s not safe in their house,” said Jodie Liddy, who works with volunteers across Denver, Colorado. 2107

DENVER – Coloradans who don’t identify as simply male or female will soon be able to choose a third sex option on their driver’s license or identification card.The Colorado Department of Revenue announced that residents will have three options – M (male), F (female) and X – starting this month.The change in policy is to bring the state into better compliance following two court rulings at the state and federal level, the Division of Motor Vehicles’ Executive Director Michael Hartman told the Denver Post.“This is an important step for the state of Colorado that the state documents reflect our values,” Hartman told the Post. “People are people no matter their sex identification.”Hartman said the change will be a simple one and won’t cost taxpayers any money.In order to choose “X” for their sex on a driver’s license, a person will need to provide either a change of sex designation form signed by a licensed medical or behavioral health care provider or a birth certificate with an “X” sex designation. The change cannot be made online.California, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine and Washington, DC already offer a non-binary sex designation on driver’s licenses and ID cards. Licenses from those states with an “X” designation can be converted directly to a Colorado license with the “X” sex marker.The state said a license or ID card with the "X" designation will be compliant with the federal REAL ID standards.The state also is proposing allowing a third sex option on birth certificates following the settlement of a lawsuit that aimed to declare the state’s birth certificate policy unconstitutional because of its requirement that a person’s sex be surgically changed in order to alter the sex designation on a certificate.The new driver’s license and ID card policy goes into effect under an emergency rule on Nov. 30. DENVER — Twenty years ago, Gary Jugert found love at a music shop."I bought a ukulele at a secondhand store and back then there weren’t any books or classes so I had to teach myself how to play ukulele. It turns out it’s a very fun and exciting instrument that you can share with other people," Jugert said.He began teaching lessons and even opened up a ukulele repair shop, though he says he was not a naturally musical person."I didn't start music seriously until I was 35," he said.Still, in 2012, Jugert created the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra. It was a huge hit until the pandemic silenced its 100 or so musicians in March."We instantaneously could not meet anymore and so several of us decided, hey, what are our alternatives for getting the group together?" Jugert said. "And we tried all of the various platforms. The problem was there’s a tiny bit of a lag on Zoom classes and because we play instrumental — ensemble music — it doesn’t work without post-editing. I said, 'Well, why don’t we meet on YouTube?'"That is how this silver lining came to be. Each morning, Jugert heads to his spare bedroom where people from all over the world log on for his lessons.He said 90% of the people who log on are 55 and older, and 80% are women.He's become such a hit, he now teaches six 45-minute classes every day."I just love it," Jugert said.His students say this is about so much more than making music."It’s just such a good social outlet. I retired a year and a half ago so I don’t see my work friends anymore," said student, Jeri Sampson. "It’s been a real good social thing for me."This may not be the orchestra the musicians envisioned, but thanks to Jugert, it's become everything they need."People need something to do right now. They need quality education. Musically, it’s hard to get right now. I think with the challenges music teachers are facing in music education, why not do it?"
