A horse and donkey rescue shelter in Glennwood, IA is feeling the pain of the cold winter months.Genea Stoops, the owner of Hooves and Paws Rescue says they've been hit with a shortage of space and increase in hay prices. The shelter currently cares for 31 horses and donkeys, including seven mini horses that have sicknesses or injuries and are being rehabilitated. After a tough winter, Stoops said more horses are in need of rescue."We're starting to deal with a lot of neglect cases coming out of winter. It was a hard winter for us," said Stoops. With the bitter cold, Stoops said extra hay and straw was needed to feed the horses and keep the minis warm in their stalls. With the demand in hay, the feed costs increased."Now we're cutting into spring, and nobody's cut their hay so we're using last year's hay, which is not unusual but there's a lot of high prices on the hay and not everyone can afford it," added Stoops.Stoops says in Nebraska and Iowa, hay typically costs to a bale, but with the demand, prices have gone up to - per bale."There are neglect cases, and then there's people who are trying really hard and can't get hay. If we're having trouble finding hay, then I know others having trouble getting hay," said Stoops. There's now a waiting list of horses owners want to surrender to the shelter, but for now, Stoops is trying to get them more hay in the meantime. The horses also need spring shots which will cost the shelter at least ,100. You can learn more about the organization on their website. 1551

A couple of Las Vegas newlyweds made an extremely selfless move by asking their wedding guests to donate to their favorite animal rescue organization in lieu of wedding gifts.Jessica Rauch and Tony Lopez feel fortunate they were able to make a decision like this."We're very blessed to have a lot of the things that we would already need in life," said Rauch. They're also both dog lovers."We both great up with dogs and love animals very much."They decided to put their heads together and figure out how they could give back on their wedding day."Both of us really like to give back and volunteer for nonprofits and we like to live our lives in a charitable way so we thought hey what better tribute than to encourage our friends and family, if they want to give us a gift, to donate to A Home 4 Spot," said Rauch. The couple recently adopted their two dogs from A Home 4 Spot?and loves the way they operate."We didn't know much about them but they were this amazing group of volunteers foster the puppies in their homes and when we met them, and the volunteers, and then of course they introduced us to Shorty, we fell in love with the whole operation."All the pieces came together and donating to their cause was what the couple wanted to do."Our friends and family were so generous and really stepped up to the plate."The couple was able to write a check for ,000 to the animal rescue group."Everything matters and so any donation that they receive goes to food or leashes or anything they need to keep the operation running."Rauch says the rescue group was ecstatic."(They were) over the moon thrilled and we couldn't be happier that that was the decision that we made."Also, instead of having their wedding party hold flowers to walk down the aisle, each member carried a shelter dog instead. 1806

A lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair, wrapped in a bloodstained telegram about his 1865 assassination, is up for sale. Boston-based RR Auction says bidding has opened online for the items ahead of a live auction scheduled for Sept. 12. Measuring roughly 2 inches long, the bushy lock of hair was removed during Lincoln’s postmortem examination after he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., by John Wilkes Booth. The auction house says it was given to Dr. Lyman Beecher Todd, a Kentucky postmaster and a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, the 16th president’s widow. 582

A Facebook selfie snapped Sunday featuring members of the Gainesville, Florida Police Department drew quite a response from admirers across the United States. The selfie, which has drawn nearly 170,000 comments and more than 100,000 shares, reportedly made the chief of the department "blush." Gainesville Police also requested people not call 911, requesting the trio to respond to their "incident."The three officers, who many consider "attractive" and "hot," were responding to Hurricane Irma incidents on Sunday. "Hello officer handsome! Sorry, i know you're out there helping but who doesn't like a cute first responder," Shari Dixon commented. Unfortunately for those interested, two of the three officers pictured are married. But the good news: Gainesville Police agreed to create a calendar featuring its officers. Proceeds will go toward disaster relief, the department said.   925

A driver was life-flighted to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center after leading troopers on a chase that caused him to miss a stop sign, before going airborne in Medina County on Wednesday morning.Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a white 2009 Mazda 6 for a speed violation of going 76 miles per hour in a 35 mph speed zone on US 42 near Grafton Road.Authorities said the driver attempted to get away from troopers by traveling westbound on Grafton Road in Medina County when he missed the stop sign at Marks Road, causing him to go airborne for about the length of a football field. The car cut off the top of two trees that were about 15-20 feet in the air before coming to a stop in a front yard. The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash. Authorities said alcohol is suspected at this time, but it's unclear why the driver was evading police. 942
