SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The former home of San Diego Padres icon Tony Gwynn has finally found a buyer."Mr. Padre's" Poway home, that had since been foreclosed, was sold on Dec. 13 for ,429,500, according to Realtor.com. The two-acre residence was placed on the auction block in June starting at .2 million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The majority of residents at Reo Vista Healthcare Center in Paradise Hills have COVID-19, according to officials with the facility.A total of 112 residents have tested positive, according to the facility’s administrator Curtis White. 40 staff members also tested positive for COVID-19. White confirmed 14 residents have passed away. Of that number, five died in local hospitals.The facility holds 135 residents.Juanita Gomez was one of the residents who tested positive. Her son told Team 10 she passed away July 1st.The state strike team assisted in expediting testing for residents and staff, White said. They have visited the facility three times.Cesar Noriega’s 90-year-old mother also tested positive. She is currently in the hospital dealing with COVID-19 and other health related issues. “She’s not doing well. She’s in a lot of pain,” Noriega said. Noriega said he urged early testing at the facility, but his pleas for help went ignored. He is now trying to figure out where his mother can get care after she is released from the hospital.“I’ve gone through elation, through depression, to anger… this is almost on a daily basis,” Noriega said.White said “most of the individuals with COVID are experiencing mild or no symptoms.” 13 residents and 23 staff members have recovered.“Our top priority remains the health and well-being of everyone in our facility,” White said. 1409
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission announced details about a planned purchase of two hotels to convert into permanent housing for the homeless.After a six-month search, city officials announced the purchase of the Residence Inns in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. The price tag: 6.5 million.Scott Marshall of the San Diego Housing Commission says the project draws upon city, county and state funds to turn hotel rooms into 332 affordable apartments for the homeless, many of them currently staying at the convention center as part of the program, Operation Shelter To Home."This is not temporary shelter. They are permanent homes that will provide them a path out of the shelter and off the streets," said Marshall.Marshall says of the 29 sites considered, the two Residence Inns stood out."They were operating as hotels and in good condition. They didn't require a lot of work for people to move in," said Marshall.Federal housing vouchers will help residents with part of the rent. They'll also receive a host of wraparound services."Things like health care, Life skills training and employment assistance to help them get back on their feet and to a more stabile life," said Marshall.The hotels turned apartments reside in commercial areas, with many other motels and hotels as neighbors. SDSU marketing professor Miro Copic says any issues at the sites could turn into pubic relations problems."Tourists and travel agents could see it as a negative, and it may turn away people from the area. The city has to manage this effectively. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers are quickly adapting to online lesson plans to engage their students.Third grade teacher Carlisa Flanders said Friday was the first day she'd been back to school since Grant K-8 shut its doors March 13 due to coronavirus concerns.Flanders said the day the school closed was hectic and stressful, "we had a couple hours to hussle. I put together two weeks of work, took as much as I could went home and hunkered down."She was emotional thinking of the future, wondering when she was going to see her students again and when school would reopen.Tuesday was the day she was able to go online, using a program called Zoom, and video conference with her students. She said 18 of the 21 students have been attending school this week.Friday morning, their homework assignment was to bring one thing to share. Many of her students showed off their pets."The majority of my focus is going to be making sure I stay connected with my students, making sure they feel the love," she said, gesturing at a board behind her with the words, 'Good Morning! You are awesome! You are loved!' written in different colored markers.Flanders said right now class is optional and labeled as enrichment. She said Thursday she read a book to the kids.Parents, like mom Leona Smith, said the social interaction from class is exactly what her son has been missing, "that connection he has, and the bonds that he has with his friends and his teacher it's like no other.""I think we forget how much school and their friends and their teachers are part of their everyday life," Smith said.Mrs. Flanders has been working tirelessly to bridge boundaries with online education, "I am now texting, communicating with friends I now have in Georgia, in Texas, in Oregon who are also third grade teachers and I'm collaborating virtually with strangers but their hearts are in the exact same place as mine and we're all just like try this, try this, try this."She said her tech savvy students are also stepping up teaching her tricks, like starting a chat and sharing pictures through the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets.
