SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The vaccination of a lifetime is just days away for San Diego hospitals. Sharp healthcare administrators are getting ready to distribute thousands of Pfizer vaccines to their front line employees.“They will sign up and be scheduled,” said VP of Sharp Pharmacy Services, Suzanne Shea. “We don’t want people lining up at the door. We want to make sure we’re maintaining social distancing.”Shea says their freezers will store the doses at the necessary -80 degrees Celsius. He’s a physical therapist who works with coronavirus patients who have been hospitalized.“We're right in front of them,” said Montemayor. “Standing them up, face-to-face. The first inclination is to want them to wear a mask so they're not coughing onto you. But, their oxygen saturations are so low that you almost just feel bad for asking them to do so.”He sees the long-term effects of the virus can have on the body. He says some people can’t even get out of bed. Others have lasting symptoms resembling a recent stroke.“I've seen a lot of people that won’t return to normal life,” said Montemayor. “It takes a village to see these folks and the nurses are overwhelmed. It's all hands on deck.”Montemayor says the long-term effects of coronavirus outweigh any potential side effects from getting a vaccine.Sharp Healthcare says even people who have already had COVID-19 should be vaccinated. 1812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is increasing staffing ahead of Santa Ana winds expected to swirl around the county to start the work week. On Sunday, 10News got a hands-on tour of Station 14 in North Park. It is one of five San Diego Fire stations with an engine, ladder truck, and now a fully staffed brush truck for the next two days. "Our brush rigs are always able to be covered," San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said. "We just have to un-staff a rig to move over to it. In this case, those rigs are actually covered right now, and they can all go."Because of the upcoming Santa Ana winds, the Department is staffing 25 additional crew members, specifically for wildfires. While engines and ladder trucks are most commonly used in day-to-day operations, the 0,000 brush truck is on a league of its own."It's imperative that we are able to make access quickly into areas where the engine cannot get into," Fire Engineer, Tim Swanson said. "And that's why we have these brush rigs."Unlike the concrete jungle in New York City, the City of San Diego has many different kinds of terrain. Because of that, in the academy, all firefighters are trained in all three truck types: engine, ladder, and brush.The brush truck has off-road tires, a 600-gallon tank, and specialized tools like backfire canisters, burn-over protection, and this triple hose backpack. The truck may even become a mobile home for the crew. That is why it has comfortable seats and carries household items. "If we're out on a strike team, we are gone for sometimes two weeks at a time with little to no ground support," Swanson said. "So, we need to be self-sufficient for two weeks."Even if fires do not erupt in our area, they are always ready to go."Sometimes, when [Northern California] is asking for help, we have to do it," Deputy Chief Zombro said. "And we just have to up our game down here to make sure we stay covered, and we've always done that."After two days, the department will re-assess to see if they need to continue the increased staffing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Sheriff's investigators asked the public for help locating a Fallbrook man who disappeared in 2018.Officials say 50-year-old Arnoldo Loaiza Franco was reported missing on Aug. 10, 2018, by his family in Fallbrook, But the last time Franco had communication with anyone was on Aug. 1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three prominent Democrats have filed papers with the City of San Diego declaring their intention to run for mayor in 2020. San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and Congressman Scott Peters all submitted documents to the City Clerk, allowing them to fund raise for the 2020 primary on March 3. They would replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, who is termed out in 2020. Bry formally announced her candidacy on Wednesday. She said her experience as a high tech entrepreneur and nonprofit leader give her a unique approach to tackling key city issues like cost of housing, homelessness, clean energy, and educating students for the jobs of tomorrow.
