BALTIMORE - Chyler Leigh may be known for her role in Supergirl, but on Saturday she had the opportunity to meet real-life superheroes in Baltimore. The former Grey's Anatomy actress teamed up with her husband, Nathan West, and the organization Singing for Superheroes to help raise money for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Leigh and West are in a band, East of Eli, and on Saturday they filmed a music video with cancer patient Ashley Hackman. “This is an opportunity to bring some joy, some brightness, some light, in a place where obviously it’s great to get a little extra sunshine I’m sure," said Leigh.Singing for Superheroes was started by Steven Battey and Alix Petersen in 2016, and it uses music to empower children with illness and disabilities. They have made multiple music videos with cancer patients across the country to raise money, awareness, and spread their message of empowerment. “It’s amazing though because we are parents, we have three kids of our own, and that was a huge reason to do this when it came about. To have an opportunity to work on this, it was a no-brainer, we had to do this because it was that important to us. You know to lend that hand, give some love, spread some love,” explained West. And soon after arriving at the hospital, West and Leigh learned they wouldn't be the only ones spreading love and hope. “What’s funny too is we come here to spread that love and give the gift that keeps on giving with the music, but at the same time these kids keep on blessing you over and over again. I’m going like, ‘Really? You are so happy and amazing and I want to just take you home, you know?’ It’s incredible,” West said. "Oh they are warriors. Oh my goodness, just to see the joy on their faces, and it’s just sometimes even the little things, but how strong these kids are it’s absolutely amazing. We just keep saying over and over again we are so honored to be a part of it,” added on Leigh. The song in the music video is titled "No giving up" and aims to spread the message that those touched by cancer are not alone and to keep pushing through. "We just want to encourage kids to never give up, or anyone going through what they are going through with cancer," said Battey who helped write the song. Battey is known for writing songs for artists like Justin Bieber, Madonna, Flo-Rida, Bruno Mars, and more. He lost his mother to cancer in 2004 and said he thought of her when writing this song. "We just wanted to encourage the kids that are going through it to keep on fighting, and we thought "No giving up" was the perfect title,” Battey continued to say. “The song really transcends. Yes, we are here with the kids and cancer and stuff, but it can go far beyond that. This song is really relatable in so many ways. We are not just speaking to the kids, but we are speaking to the families, to you, to anybody who needs a moment to remember, and some support and love to say hey, I’m going to keep going, keep moving forward, keep fighting,” explained West. As our country works to rebound, companies are managing the pressure of keeping workplaces safe.Employers are taking precautions ahead of Thanksgiving with concerns about the coronavirus spreading over the holiday.Companies are doing everything from issuing memos, reminding workers about the public health guidance on gatherings and travel, to asking workers to sign pledges they'll keep gatherings small.But there are limits to how much say your boss has on what you're doing outside of work.“They are allowed to inquire about what their travel plans might be, what their off-duty conduct might be and they can ask employees to disclose that information,” said Christine Lamb, an employment attorney with Fortis Law Partners.Lamb says many states prevent employers from discriminating against workers who are doing things outside of work that are lawful.But if you aren't following policies your work put in place for COVID-19, they can ask you to go through some type of coaching or counseling.Lamb advises companies against checking in on their workers on social media.“You might have an employee who is at a gathering of 50 people and they're not posting anything on social media. The employer might not know what's going on and another employee that posts a photograph of them with 10 people on social media, there's just a risk of that unequal application of the rules,” said Lamb.She says one thing employers should be thinking about now is what does next week look like for the company post-Thanksgiving. That includes having a plan for people to work from home if that's possible.One drug maker told the Wall Street Journal that it's offering workers a paid 2-week quarantine if they need it after the holiday, where they'll be expected to work from home. 1773

As the end of an incredibly contentious and the heated 2020 election season ends, new research suggests that Americans are more susceptible to falling prey to disinformation depending on which state they call home.For months, Bhaskar Chakravorti and his team at the Global Business School at Tufts University have been analyzing how misinformation has been spreading during this election cycle. Where a person lives often makes them a higher target to everything from fake Facebook accounts to fake Twitter accounts and even fake headlines."We are in extremely more dangerous territory now than we were two years ago," Chakravorti explained.Bad actors, the analysis found, are more likely to target people in states that are either facing hotly contested Presidential or Senate races. Chakravorti says in places like Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Montana and Arkansas, voters are more vulnerable to being hit with misinformation. In places like Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey and Minnesota, residents are less likely to be bombarded by false or misleading posts and stories.A person's age, education level and media consumption all weigh into the findings.Chakravorti also says that misinformation is more likely to spread and gain traction on social media."The misinformation is asymmetric in its power,” he explained. “It travels further and faster than truth and facts."Most troublesome right now, the amount of misinformation spreading about voting, from fake stories claiming people can vote after Nov. 3 to false information about mail-in ballot deadlines. Experts also say the spread of misinformation will likely continue long after Election Day.The non-profit Common Cause has also been studying the issue closely."It can result in more uncertainty when there’s already a decrease in the institutional trust and authority that many people feel with their government," said Jesse Littlewood, who works with the group.So, what's the best way to combat misinformation?Do it on the local level. People are more likely to trust information that comes directly from their city or state officials, especially about voting."It’s a real challenge for voters to stay abreast with all that changing information," Littlewood said. 2239
August is usually an exciting time to be an educator, as Teachers start decorating their classrooms and preparing for a new group of students.This year, however, many teachers are experiencing a new set of emotions.“My colleagues are fearful,” said Tanya Kitts-Lewinski, president of the Kenosha Education Association in Wisconsin.Kitts-Lewinski says many teachers are fearful of returning to campus during the COVID-19 crisis. Now, she’s calling out the safety of teaching during this pandemic, even virtually, saying some schools are requiring teachers to teach online from inside a classroom.“We can’t serve our students if we’re sick,” she said.Now a local law firm is preparing for the worst by offering free wills to teachers returning to classrooms."People are very scared, and this is the one thing I can do to help this group, and I'm committed to doing as much as I can," said Jim Brzezinski, a partner at Tabak Law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Brzezinski came up with this idea after talking with his wife, who is also a teacher. After posting this service online, the response was overwhelming."Within 12 hours of opening up this to teachers, we got about 300 requests within the first 12 hours," he said.We reached out to the Kenosha Unified School District, but they wouldn't talk on camera. AURORA, Colo. — Three Aurora police officers under investigation for a photograph taken near the site where Elijah McClain struggled with officers were seen in the picture imitating the carotid hold used on McClain by police before the 23-year-old Black man died last August, two sources with knowledge of the situation told KMGH on Tuesday.Neither source had personally seen the photograph of the officers as of Tuesday afternoon, though they were aware of what the photograph showed.Aurora Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson on Monday night announced the officers were being investigated for a photograph but declined to say what the photograph showed.Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman on Tuesday tweeted that he was "deeply concerned over the facts surrounding the photographs," but Coffman also did not detail what was shown in the photographs.The officers were notified of their disciplines on Tuesday morning, the sources told KMGH, but the punishments were not yet public. Officers have a three-day period to appeal the discipline, the sources said.The picture depicting the involved officers was sent in a group text to other officers before it was reported to police officials, the sources said.Earlier Tuesday, Aurora police spokesperson Officer Matthew Longshore said the photos were reported to the department by a fellow Aurora officer, which the sources said occurred last Thursday. He said the police chief review board – comprised of the department’s three division chiefs and the deputy police chief – were reviewing the photos and will make a decision on whether, or how to, punish the officers.Longshore said that the officers could potentially be terminated depending on the review board’s decision. Officers would also be able to appeal the decision.The investigation will be “publicly released in its entirety promptly upon its conclusion,” said Wilson, adding the investigation will include reports, photographic evidence, officer’s names, “and my final determination which can rise to the level of termination.”Mari Newman, the attorney for McClain’s family, said in a statement Tuesday morning that APD found “a new low.”“This is a department where officers tackled an innocent young black man for no reason, inflicted outrageous force - including two carotid chokeholds - for fifteen minutes as he pled for his life, joked when he vomited, and threatened to sic a dog on him for not lying still enough as he was dying,” Newman said in a statement. “They tampered with their body cameras to hide the evidence. They exonerated the killers. They deployed riot police and spewed pepper gas on peaceful protestors at a vigil of mourners playing the violin.
