With Election Day right around the corner, Mattel has unveiled their latest addition to its "Inspiring Women" series - Susan B. Anthony.The toy company said that it wanted to honor Anthony for her "pioneering efforts and far-reaching impact" in the fight for women having the right to vote."On November 5, 1872, while protesting and leading the charge for women's voting rights, Susan B. Anthony made a defiant move," Mattel said on its website. Anthony Museum and House unveiled the doll inside Anthony's home.In a press release, Deborah L. Hughes, President & CEO of the Anthony Museum, said they were delighted to hear from Mattel's design team about constructing a doll that would reflect "Susan B. When Nolan Davis called his community to march for Black Lives Matter, hundreds turned up for the cause. On Saturday, he led demonstrators from a park in his hometown of Kirkwood, Missouri to the town's city center, leading chants along the way.But Nolan's protest looked a bit different than others that have taken place across the country in recent weeks — because almost all the participants were children.Nolan, 8, helped organize the protest along with his mother, Kristin Davis. According to CNN, he was inspired to lead his own protest after the two attended a few other rallies in the St. Louis area.Nolan and his mother designed a flyer to get the word out about the protest and shared it on Facebook. Nolan told CNN that he believed that about 50 people would show up to his event. But when he arrived at the park on Saturday morning, there were about 700 people ready to support his movement.According to CNN, Kristin Davis, who is white, adopted Nolan and his 5-year-old sister, Caroline, who are both Black. Their mother says that while she could never understand what her children go through, she's tried to have regular conversations about racism with them to keep them safe."We're preparing them for when they're older and taller and bigger. At one school, students are learning in a completely new way.We all know it can be fun to play with a dog. But by helping Buster get through an obstacle course, Buster's also helping elementary school student Mason Gentry in ways he hadn't planned."Definitely with focus," Gentry said. "Like I think if you put the spotlight on them and say you need to have impulse control then you get a resistance but when it's over we need to teach the dog this and then they see, 'Oh that's a valuable thing.'"Gillette writes personalized books to complement her student's work with the dogs, weaving in the lessons each one is trying to learn."Nobody wants to be told you need this you need that," Gillette said. While there are still questions about whether trick-or-treating will happen in 2020 and how neighborhoods will make it possible, there is no question Americans like their Halloween candy.Sales of Halloween candy and chocolate at grocery stores are up 17 percent over 2019 so far this season, according to the National Confectioners Association. Total sales, including online purchases, is up 13 percent year-over-year.The National Confectioners Association, NCA, represents manufacturers and suppliers of sweet treats, gum, mints and chocolates.Their research showed chocolate is driving the increase. Halloween chocolate sales are up 25 percent over 2019 so far. The NCA released data over the summer showing chocolate was the treat of choice of Americans during the pandemic, with sales increasing five percent March through August over the same time period in 2019. Sales of premium chocolate during that time was up 12 percent year-over-year. Ferrara Candy, which makes Sweetarts, Nerds, Brach’s Candy Corn, Gobstoppers and more, said Halloween sales bring in about .5 billion in sales. In an interview with Axios, CEO Todd Siwak said their company learned a lot from the drop in sales for Easter. This was also the time many stores were closing because of lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus. With hospitals overwhelmed in much of the United States, the number of coronavirus cases jumped to record levels on Friday.
