CANARY ISLANDS -- Imagine rowing almost non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean with a group of four people. No bathroom, no shade and a limited supply of food. “You’re totally exposed to the elements,” said Evan Stratton, a U.S. veteran. Evan and three others rowed across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands off of Spain to Antigua, near Puerto Rico, as part of the Talker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge — a yearly ocean rowing race. The path is 3,000 nautical miles. “Our row took 50 days, 11 hours, and 35 minutes,” he said. “Which seems like a really long time, but we actually set a world record for our boat class.” The team, titled Fight Oar Die, was the only American team to compete this year. More than just a physical challenge, the race is a test of the mind as well. We sat down with Evan, who walked us through it. “It’s really a challenge in mental strength,” he said. “It’s an introspective look at yourself whether you want one or not because you remove all inputs,” he explained. “There’s no work phone calls, no e-mails, no TV, no radio.” Through their journey, psychologists are hoping to learn something. “We got involved as part of that research component,” said Dr. Trey Cole, a clinical psychologist and former veteran himself. Dr. Cole oversees the researchers from the University of Denver that have been working with the Fight Oar Die rowing team throughout their experience. “There’s a lot to do with motivation and sleep and purpose and those type of factors we’re trying to take a closer look at,” Dr. Cole said. He helped the men prepare beforehand too — with conflict resolution, stress management, and other skills. “It’s hilarious to be sitting in your off shift in the cabin hearing two guys on the boat yell at each other but they’re still just rowing,” Evan said. “The end goal is you gotta get there.” It was a team effort with personal mental challenges each rower dealt with individually. Part of Evan’s way of getting through was the photos and cards his wife packed for him, cards he could open when he hit “the wall,” when he was “almost home,” and on his son’s first birthday that he missed while rowing. Evan said a challenge like this took the support of his family, but it all starts with motivation. “It just takes getting out and doing it,” he said.Evan spent four years of his life as a Marine earlier on in his life. “I went through my own battles with PTSD and mental health,” he said. Bringing awareness to mental health was part of his motivation for joining the rowing team this year. “We really wanted to show veterans that life doesn’t end after the military, that you can still go out and do really big things and really hard things and really incredible things,” Evan said. This awareness is at the forefront of Fight Oar Die’s mission — to provide a platform for veterans' mental health issues.“The hope is that we can generate some conclusions from that that could be helpful in informing the future of veteran and service member care,” Dr. Cole said. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently.The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash. Not only is it plentiful and cheap, but there could be produce problems coming soon as workers are not able to pick citrus and row crops, like lettuce and broccoli, on the West Coast due to the wildfires, added Tarantino.Some viewers asked why canned pumpkin is so hard to find?7 Eyewitness News contacted Libby's and received the following response:"The team in Illinois is currently working hard harvesting Libby’s pumpkins and canning for the upcoming season. We typically begin shipping to retailers around this time for bake season, so you can expect to see pumpkin back on shelves over the next few weeks."Wegmans also sent a statement regarding the shortage of some items:"There are certain products that are still in high demand, for example, cleaning supplies and paper products. While we continue to get shipments of these products to our stores, we are on allocation from the manufacturers. We have purchase limits on these high-demand products to best serve the needs of as many customers as possible."The National Grocers Association sent the following shopping tip:"Consumers should plan ahead of their trip to the store, make a list and purchase what they need for the time, as well as check on the store’s website or social media pages ahead of their trip as stores will communicate important information on product availability and additional tips." Cheetos-flavored mac 'n cheese is hitting the shelves this weekend.The company that makes Cheetos, Frito Lays, announced on Wednesday the launch of Cheetos Mac 'n Cheese, which will be sold exclusively at Walmart beginning on August 8.The cheesy-goodness product will available in three flavors: Bold & Cheesy, Flamin' Hot, and Cheesy Jalape?o."We've seen incredible culinary creativity from our Cheetos fans through the years, taking our product and using as an actual ingredient in recipes — whether at restaurants, or now more than ever, at home," said Rachel Ferdinando, SVP, CMO Frito-Lay North America in a press release. "Cheetos Mac 'n Cheese borrows that culinary inspiration to provide a mischievous mashup of an ordinary fan favorite. We're putting our orange-dusted fingerprints on an at-home staple at a time when home mealtime occasions are on the rise.""Beginning August 8, fans can pick up Cheetos Mac 'n Cheese in both single box and cup format at Walmart stores nationally or online," the company said.Consumers will have the option to purchase the single box or cup format for a suggested retail price of 98 cents. Online interaction with one another has gotten to the point where websites and apps are having to remind us how to act. The neighborhood app Nextdoor has gotten a reputation for sometimes strange posts that can prompt mean and off-color responses.There's a whole Twitter account dedicated to examples. Now, Nextdoor has rolled out a new feature to try and keep some civility online. It's called a "Kindness Reminder." If you try and post a response that's similar to one that's been flagged in the past, you'll get a reminder of the community guidelines and that they can change your response. But you can still post what you want. “One of the problems of the age we're living in is that people don't necessarily share a common understanding of what counts as civil interaction,” said Keith Bybee, a professor of law and political science at Syracuse University.Bybee says some people are strategically not civil or just plain rude in order to attract attention. You see it in politics and trolling behavior. But in the end, civility benefits everyone. “Civility is sort of the lubricant that makes social interaction possible,” Bybee said. “It allows us to live in a diverse, heterogeneous society but nonetheless coordinate our actions for common purposes, so it’s important to find a way to get along with strangers.”Ultimately, you have to care what the other person thinks of you to achieve civility. 1418
