For the first time since the Camp Fire started its deadly rampage 11 days ago, firefighters will get a big assist from rain.The 4 to 6 inches expected later this week will help suppress an inferno that has already killed at least 77 people. It'll also finally improve the heavily polluted and unhealthy air smothering Northern California.But there's a catch: With more than 150,000 acres of newly scorched earth, there's little vegetation to soak up the rain.That means the region is now at risk of mudslides, which could be especially dangerous for firefighters battling the inferno."They're having to fight this fire right now in the mountainous areas -- the ravines, the canyons, very steep, rugged terrain," said Scott McLean, deputy chief for Cal Fire -- the state's forestry and fire protection agency."They're back there on dirt roads, dirt trails, trying to fight this fire. Now it's going to turn into mud, which will be another hazard for them to contend with."Along with mudslides comes the risk of debris flow gushing from the Camp Fire's charred rubble."Recently burned areas could see ash flow ... and even have the potential for debris flow if rain intensity is high enough," the National Weather Service's Sacramento office said.Since the Camp Fire broke out November 8, it's destroyed more than 10,500 homes and torched an area the size of Chicago.Even worse: Fire officials predict the Camp Fire is only halfway done burning. The Department of Labor’s latest reports shows 1.4 million people filed new jobless claims, compared to 1.3 million people the week prior.“People are overwhelmed by the news. They are overwhelmed when they see that a million extra people just filed for unemployment,” said Sarah Johnston, a job search strategist.Johnston runs the company Briefcase Coach and specializes in helping people find work in this job market.“The good news is my clients and I know from looking at LinkedIn’s update, people are getting jobs,” said Johnston.Finding a job right now, with such high unemployment, is not easy. It is competitive but--as Johnston teaches in a course with LinkedIn-- if you search in the “hidden job market,” you’ll find better success.“The hidden job market is all the jobs that are unadvertised online,” said Johnston.These jobs may be unadvertised because an employer may be planning a promotion or expanding but hasn’t announced that yet. If you can get to know the hiring manager before new jobs post, you have a better chance of topping their list of candidates.“Tip number one is to understand what your options are. You really need to know your target companies, who hires people like you for work that you want to do,” said Johnston.She recommends creating a “target list” of the companies you want to work for and find out who are the hiring managers.Then, move on to tip number two, which is seeing who in your existing network may know or have connections to those managers or someone in that list of companies.“The final tip would be to not be afraid of being proactive in your job search and making contact or reaching out or getting an introduction to a hiring manager at your dream company or companies on your target list,” said Johnston. “It only takes one conversation to change the entire trajectory of your job search.”Johnston’s in-depth course on navigating the hidden job market is available on LinkedIn. FedEx said Monday they are planning to hire 70,000 seasonal workers as they head into the holidays.In a hiring statement on its website, the shipping company said most of those hired for its "peak season" would be added to its FedEx Ground network."As our team of more than 500,000 team members is busy preparing to deliver the holidays, we once again expect to see a large number of packages traverse our global network over the 2020 peak holiday shipping season," FedEx said. "In order to provide the best possible service during this busy time of the year, FedEx is increasing hours for some existing employees and boosting our workforce with seasonal positions, as needed."
