Grocery chain Kroger is reportedly considering banning all Visa card transactions at its locations throughout the United States due to a dispute on swipe fees, Bloomberg reported. Kroger is reportedly taking the first step toward stopping Visa transactions. At its Foods Co. Supermarkets, which are located in California, the chain will stop accepting Visa transactions next month, Bloomberg reported. “It’s pretty clear we need to move down this path, and if we have to expand that beyond Foods Co., we’re prepared to take that step,” Kroger spokesperson Chris Hjelm told Bloomberg. "When the amount retailers pay in card fees gets out of alignment, as we believe it is now, we don’t believe we have a choice but to use whatever mechanism possible to get it back in alignment.”While Kroger itself has grocery stores in 21 states, Kroger owns a number of regional chains throughout the country — Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Jay C, Food Store, Owens Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s Food and DrugVisa issued a response to Kroger's announcement. Hospital nurses in Philadelphia are ready to go on strike amid a surge of coronavirus cases across the country, according to the union. The union said in a statement that 800 members of the union at St. Mary Medical Center are planning to picket on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“Safe staffing is the main issue in our negotiation--it's why we organized last year in the first place,” says Kathy McKamey R.N., who works on St Mary's MG2 unit and has been at the hospital for 10 years, said in a statement provided by the union. “Trinity has refused to commit to the minimal safe staffing guidelines every study out there has said improve patient outcomes. But the truth is, even if they had, we don't have the staff to fill them because our wage scale is so far below that of area hospitals. Nurses are literally fleeing to other hospitals 20 minutes away where they can make to more an hour. My unit alone has lost 20 nurses since January; the perioperative areas have lost 35 nurses in the last year. GREELEY, Colorado – Weld County’s top prosecutors and Frederick police held a news conference Monday afternoon to brief the media on more details of the Chris Watts case after he was sentenced earlier in the day to several life terms in prison without the possibility of parole in the deaths of his pregnant wife and young daughters.Flanked by fellow prosecutors, Frederick Police Department representatives and the county coroner, 19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke started the news conference by thanking the law enforcement agencies involved in the case as well as the family of Shanann Watts for “serving justice” in her name and those of her two daughters and unborn child.Much of what Rourke and his deputy district attorney, Steve Wrenn, discussed at the news conference centered on new details that had not been released about the case, the autopsy reports for the three which were released after the news conference, and what will happen next for Chris Watts as he makes his way to prison for the rest of his life.Rourke said that he doesn’t believe Watts will ever truthfully answer as to why he killed his family though his parents pleaded with him during sentencing Monday to come clean and atone in the future.He said that Watts’ attorneys approached prosecutors first about the plea deal and that he did not accept until after speaking with Shanann’s family, the Rzuceks, in North Carolina beforehand. The Rzuceks addressed Watts and the case in court Monday.“That was a conversation I was only going to have with them face to face,” Rourke said.He reiterated that he and the family had talked about the state of the death penalty in Colorado and its future. Having an adequate supply of personal protective equipment could have saved the state of California hundreds of millions of dollars and stopped roughly 18,000 essential workers from getting the coronavirus, according to a new study from the University of California Berkeley.Researchers at the school looked at the cost of PPE and the early costs and infection rates of coronavirus in California. They conclude with a recommendation that the state stockpile PPE for a future pandemic.The team’s first data point is based on supply and demand; purchasing PPE when it is not high in demand, then saving it for when it's needed. According to the study, the cost of purchasing the same amount of PPE when there was not a global demand would be 17 percent of what the projected cost is now during the pandemic.“Maintaining the stockpile would be cheaper than real-time purchases even if it was not needed for another 35 years, and even if we were fortunate enough to not need the stockpile for longer than that, it would be a highly financially prudent form of insurance,” the researchers stated.Between mid-March and mid-July, roughly 250,000 healthcare workers in California filed for unemployment benefits because there was not sufficient PPE for them to go to work.For each week those healthcare workers could not report to work, it cost the state million in unemployment benefits. The researchers conclude millions could be saved by having the personal protective equipment available.Looking at rates of infection and studies from Europe showing transmission rates at hospitals, Berkeley researches believe almost 18,000 coronavirus cases among essential workers could have been prevented with an adequate supply of PPE.“If those worker cases had been avoided, an estimated 3,030 secondary cases among household members could have also been avoided, thus totaling at least 20,860 cases that could have been averted,” the study states.A separate survey conducted in June and July asked California’s skilled nursing facility staff about equipment; more than 20 percent reported still having inadequate supplies of PPE, and 80 percent said they were very or extremely concerned about workplace infection.The Berkeley study also appears to give support to California Senate Bill 275 as amended in July 2020, that “would require the state to create a PPE stockpile sufficient to protect healthcare and other essential workers for at least 90-days of a future pandemic or health emergency.” 2496
