SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Friday the arrest of a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in East Village.Gary Cushinberry, 51, dragged the woman into some bushes near 13th Street and Island Avenue about 11:30 p.m. on November 5, police said. After the assault, Cushinberry ran west toward Island Avenue, police said.The woman had been walking alone to her car when she was attacked.The San Diego Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit released a composite sketch of the suspect the following day. Through tips and leads, investigators identified Cushinberry as the suspect.Police found Cushinberry Friday morning in the 200 block of 17th Street. He was arrested on several sex assault charges and taken to San Diego County Central Jail.Officers also confirmed that Cushinberry had an outstanding warrant for theft in Allen County, Indiana.Police are asking anyone with information to call the SDPD Sex Crimes Unit at 619-531-2210. 975

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Supervisors and the charity organization responsible for running a shelter for asylum seekers responded Wednesday to the county’s lawsuit against the heads of government agencies. The County of San Diego filed the lawsuit Wednesday against Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost. The suit claims the end of the “Safe Release” program, which provided migrants with aid needed to leave San Diego County, was unlawful. The County of San Diego wants to reinstate the policy, which ended last fall, and be reimbursed for the cost of supporting asylum seekers in the following months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police believe the man whose mud-covered body was found in the Tijuana River may have floated across the border into the United States, investigators said Friday. The man’s body was found Thursday in the river behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets, police said. He was partially covered in debris, water, and mud. An autopsy revealed the man had suffered traumatic injuries, but investigators did not provide details on the nature of them. “It is possible the man’s body was carried by the Tijuana River across the border into the United States, where it was discovered,” police said. The man had distinctive tattoos, which investigators hope to use to make an identification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced Wednesday that three more people died from complications from the flu bringing the county's death toll this season to 49.The deceased were described as an 84-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, and a 50-year-old woman from East County, according to County of San Diego Communications Office spokesperson Jose A. Alvarez.All three had underlying medical conditions.“Influenza activity in the region is still elevated. People should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The flu vaccine is safe and effective.”This season's death toll is far lower than last season. 307 San Diegans died from complications from the flu through this time last year.The number of people with influenza-like symptoms who showed up at local emergency departments went up one percentage point last week, reaching 6 percent again.The flu claimed the county's first young victim Feb. 20.
