SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. We are aware fireworks are a time-tradition, however due to concerns of severe dry weather, we have been advised against them,” the district said in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five more people have died from influenza in San Diego and weekly cases hit a season high this past week.County health officials said one of the flu deaths included a 40-year-old man from North County who had underlying medical conditions with no known flu vaccination record. The other deaths ranged from 47 to 90 years of age and all also had underlying medical conditions.This season, there have been a total of 54 influenza-related deaths in the county. People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventative measures, especially those at higher risk of developing complications," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. The number is up 21 percent of the week before, when 536 cases were recorded.Due to the increased flu activity, an order for unvaccinated medical personnel to to wear masks while in patient care areas has been extended until April 30.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers.
