Demonstrators in Mexico spurred US Customs and Border Protection to shut down an El Paso, Texas, border crossing, one of the country's busiest ports of entry, early Monday, according to agency spokesman Roger Maier.Border officials shut down the crossing just before 2 a.m. (4 a.m. ET) after "a large and unruly group formed on the Mexican side," Maier said. The demonstrators "posed a threat to overrun the facility," he said, forcing CBP to employ "port hardening measures" and preventing travelers from entering the United States via the Paso del Norte International Bridge. No arrests were reported on the US side, Maier said.Authorities began permitting pedestrians to cross a few hours after the shutdown, and by 7 a.m. (9 a.m. ET), they opened one lane of northbound traffic, the spokesman said.Photos from the bridge between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico, also known as the Santa Fe Bridge, showed police standing behind barriers and concertina wire. A live cam showed a military-style tactical vehicle blocking a lane of traffic. The group, between 250 and 300 strong, was composed largely of Cuban and Salvadoran migrants who gathered at the border around midnight, 1182
DENVER — Three unvaccinated children who are visiting Colorado from another state tested positive for measles after traveling to a country with an ongoing measles outbreak, according to a Tri-County Health Department news release on Monday. The children flew into Denver International Airport with their family Wednesday. DIA officials said people who were in concourse A, on the train to the terminal, the west baggage claim or at the west passenger pick up area on that day between 1:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. may have been exposed. However, DIA said there is no ongoing risk of exposure. The exposure risk in other areas of the city is unknown at this time. Health officials said they are working to identify people who may have been exposed to the highly contagious infectious viral disease. The three patients are currently being treated at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, according to the health department.More cases of measles have occurred in the US during 2019 than any year since 1992, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The last case of measles in Colorado was in January of this year. This article was written by Robert Garrison for 1186
Carbon monoxide poisoning at a motel in Canada sent 46 people to the hospital, including 15 in critical condition, city officials said. The fire department responded to an alarm at Super 8 Motel in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Tuesday morning after carbon monoxide gas was detected in the building. At the scene, fire crews evacuated 52 people -- a majority of whom were hospitalized -- and one dog, the city tweeted Tuesday. Winnipeg Animal Services provided care for the dog."Today's incident at a Winnipeg hotel was not a gas leak. It was a carbon monoxide poisoning," Manitoba Hydro tweeted. "CO is produced by the incomplete combustion/ventilation of gas stoves, heating boilers, furnaces, propane barbecues, gas-powered water heaters & clothes dryers."The gas company said while natural gas has a rotten egg smell that helps with detection, carbon monoxide is odorless. For it to be detected, one needs a carbon monoxide alarm. The initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like, but without a fever. They may include dull headache, weakness, dizziness and nausea. High-level poisoning can result in vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. When carbon monoxide levels are higher and develop more rapidly -- for example, from generators in residential spaces -- mental confusion can set in rapidly. Victims may lose muscle control without being aware of the flu-like symptoms and will probably succumb to poisoning if they are not rescued. 1506
Economists are split on whether there will be a recession in the next few years. Many of them say if there is one, it won't be driven by the housing market like last time. However, the housing market still plays a key role in a healthy economy, so experts are watching a few things closely, including supply and demand and home values.Experts predict older Americans will flood the market by putting 21 million homes up for sale over the next 20 years. But some economists say market forces could decimate demand by then. And with low demand, sellers will be forced to lower their prices in order to sell.Experts say the whole process could create a housing bubble, and then, burst it.Experts are also watching subprime lending. That’s when lenders let people with bad credit borrow money.Critics argue those loans are more likely to go into default, especially if there’s any hiccup in the economy.Subprime lending is much lower today than it was before the last housing crisis, but some experts say those rates are still too high.Experts do say new lending standards could prevent mortgages that helped create the crisis. 1131
