CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District who siphoned more than ,000 from the district was sentenced Wednesday to a year of house arrest, three years of probation, and was ordered to repay the school district.Danya Margarita Williams of Chula Vista, 42, pleaded guilty in May to an embezzlement charge for taking money paid by prospective employees through job application fees.In addition to house arrest and probation, Williams was ordered to pay back ,988 to the school district. Another embezzlement count and a grand theft count were dismissed as part of the plea deal.As part of her job, Williams was responsible for processing money orders received for fingerprint background investigations at the district, which are required during employment screenings, according to Chula Vista Police Capt. Phil Collum. Each background investigation costs between to per applicant, and the applicants pay the fee using money orders, he said.``Instead of processing the money in accordance with district requirements, Williams deposited the money into her personal bank account,'' Collum said.District officials discovered the embezzlement -- which occurred between June 2016 and December 2017 -- and reported it to police, he said. Williams was arrested and charged in March. 1333

CHULA VSITA, Calif. (KGTV) -- In a COVID-19 world, kids are seen playing with masks on and keeping their distance. While it may look different to us, for preschool kids, this is all they know.At St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista, when a student and his or her parent arrive, they go through a health screening. If either shows symptoms, the child is sent home.Adults are also not allowed to come into the classrooms and have to stay outside.Glenda Martinez, preschool director of Daniel’s Den, on the campus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, said following the new California guidelines is manageable, what can be challenging is helping her young students understand the rules.“It’s really hard for them to understand what’s six feet. They say, ‘Ms. Glenda, I can’t do six feet, I only have two!’ I tell them I know that … but that’s what the square is ... that’s six feet. And nobody can go into their square,” said Martinez. And that’s reflected in how she set up her room. Even though they can’t do carpet time right now, she tried to bring imagination and fun back into the classroom. Each student has their own desk or car, that’s parked in their own square, with their own things inside.Right now, sharing isn’t allowed, but she’s found a way to allow them to socialize safely.“Because they have the same toys, I tell them you can play with one toy. I can play with the same kind of toy up to our edge with our masks on. And there’s not a problem, they’re still separating but they can play the same thing,” Martinez said.Another challenge for Martinez and her staff is explaining what the coronavirus is to four-year-old children. That’s why she’s made books to help them understand and they also sing songs.Coronavirus guidelines have also changed the way kids play outside. They can’t use certain equipment because of social distancing concerns. But as Martinez said, this has forced them to get creative. In the end, Martinez said they’re using these changes as an opportunity to teach their students valuable lessons. Adding, this has “taught us a little bit more about being kind to others.” 2124

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — There's something delicious brewing in Chula Vista. Its frothy, malty, hoppy flavor has already won awards.Chula Vista's brewery scene has seen a spike over the last four years. Novo Brazil Brewing, Thr3e Punk Ales, Groundswell Brewing, Bay Bridge Brewery, and Chula Vista Brewery are among the players. While "craft beer in San Diego" isn't new to many around the county, more recently it's become a catalyst in revitalizing Chula Vista's Third Avenue.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Exploring the city's diverse historyTiago Carneiro, CEO of Novo Brazil Brewing, says part of their mission was to offer a taste of the North County scene to South Bay residents."We saw a huge opportunity. Whenever you go to the north, you have a lot of breweries already," Carneiro said. "We asked ourselves, why can’t we start a new story here in Chula Vista."And why not? Chula Vista is the county's second largest city and saw one of the biggest population increases in California in 2018, according to the California Department of Finance.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Taco spot attracts customers from all over the countyBut as Carneiro points out, the craft beer scene was largely celebrated to the north. Now one look at Third Avenue and it's hard to miss the breweries and tasting rooms that line the street."And today when I see a lot of breweries coming to Chula Vista, I think it's amazing," Carneiro says. "It's good for everyone."The "Capital of Craft," as San Diego is affectionately called, saw craft beer's might in 2018 to the tune of .2 billion in economic impact, an increase of 6% from 2017, according to the San Diego Brewers Guild. LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Bayfront overhaul becoming a realityNumbers like that can reinforce brewers' ambitions. Novo itself plans to open a restaurant and brewhouse in Otay Ranch Town Center, its second location in Chula Vista since it opened in 2015.While Chula Vista's share of San Diego County breweries remains comparatively low, it's considered just the beginning of the "South Bay Uprising," a term used in calls for more craft beer in the South Bay. Craft options cropping up in National City and Imperial Beach could signal success for Chula Vista's scene. Breweries are doing their part, seen this month when Chula Vista Brewery took home a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. Their award-winning brew: an American-style brown ale called "Browner Than Ivan.""I really believe in the area," says Carneiro. "I think in Chula Vista, there is a very strong community here." 2546

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A suspect was arrested in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in Chula Vista, police announced Tuesday. On May 15, Chula Vista police were called to the 200 block of G Street in response to reports of gunfire in the area. Upon officers’ arrival, Fredrick Wood was found on the ground with gunshot wounds.Wood was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.Through their investigation, police learned Wood was “shot inside a nearby residence belonging to Enrique Delgado. The victim then ran into the street after being shot, where he collapsed.”Police said Delgado was nowhere to be found.According to police, investigators tracked down Delgado on June 11 at a motorhome in San Diego. Police said Delgado “admitted to shooting Mr. Wood during a dispute, refused to surrender and stated he was armed with a firearm.”A SWAT team was called to the scene as Delgado barricaded himself in the motorhome. He eventually surrendered without incident.Police reported “several firearms and a large quantity of narcotics were also located inside Delgado’s motorhome at the time of arrest.”Delgado was booked into jail and faces charges of murder, possession of narcotics for sale, convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, illegal possession of an assault weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm and having a concealed weapon in a vehicle. 1468

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire at an apartment in downtown Chula Vista sent two children to a hospital early Saturday, authorities said.Firefighters responded at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of a fire at an apartment above a business in the 300 block of Third Avenue, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Harry Muns said. Two people were reportedly walking by the home when they saw smoke and flames and rushed to wake everyone.Smoke was visible from the back of the building upon arrival, Muns said. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and they found a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy inside the unit where the fire began. The two were given medical treatment for smoke-related injuries.Five people were displaced by the fire -- including three from adjacent units, Muns said. 796
