Identity theft, or identity fraud, once meant crooks were churning out fake credit cards. But as that became easier to detect, a more insidious crime has evolved: the creation of completely new identities.Known as “synthetic identity theft,” it involves fraudsters using a combination of fake information, such as a fictitious name, and real data, like a child’s Social Security number, to create fraudulent accounts.It is a growing problem, says Eva Casey-Velasquez, president and CEO of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center.But the scope of the problem is difficult to determine because the crime can go undetected for years, she says. In a new effort to tackle the deadly opioid addiction crisis in the US, pharmacy giant CVS announced on Friday it will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions. This restriction will apply to patients who are new to pain therapy.The new pharmacy program will also limit the daily dosage of pain pills based on their strength and will require use of immediate-release formulations before extended release opioids -- intended for severe, long-term pain treatment -- are dispensed.The changes will roll out on February 1, 2018 and cover all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients.CVS, which manages medications for nearly 90 million plan members, is one of the largest pharmaceutical chains in the US, with approximately 9,600 CVS Pharmacy stores and more than 1,100 walk-in medical clinics."With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse," said Larry J. These educational sessions will also emphasize the importance of keeping medications secure in the home and proper disposal of unused medication.To help patients wanting to follow these guidelines, the company will almost double the number of drug disposal units in its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program from 800 to 1,550 kiosks. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. The pandemic hit businesses hard like Mikulin's hard. “It wouldn’t take much right now to ruin, completely destroy the small business landscape.”Many are not sure what the future holds.“Your plans go out the window,” Mikulin said. “So you deal with it everyday, day by day, and it’s survival.”“It feels like we’re alone. It feels like there's no one in our corner as a small business owner,” he added.“There’s concern of the small businesses that not enough attention is being paid to them in Washington, that Washington is looking at some of the bigger items in the election and they’re forgetting about the fact that small businesses is the major driver of our economy,” Mac Clouse, business expert for over 40 years and professor at University of Denver, said.“The stock market is a general indicator of what's going on with stock prices, and stock prices are usually reflective of your larger firms, firms that are publicly traded,” he said. “That really doesn't measure what's happening with the mom and pop businesses, the small businesses. The only way we know how they’re doing is to ask them.”Of those surveyed, 78% said the economy was “average," “somewhat average," or “very poor” in August.“When you have people saying the stock market is doing great but 78% of business owners are saying the opposite, clearly there's a breakdown, not in what's being discussed, but what is meaningfully being discussed and taken action on,” Carlin Walsh, Owner and CEO of Elevation Beer Company, said. His business was impacted by shutdowns and restrictions.“Total, our revenue was cut 60% for what we normally would be,” he said. “I am not comfortable with what the next three to four months brings, so because of that, we've been putting more money than usual into savings.”Without the same safety net some of the larger companies have, small businesses are taking things day by day.“For them, what’s important is what’s going to happen in the next three to six months,” Clouse said.Many are waiting to see if they’ll see any help from the government. Surveys from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce show a majority of small business owners are more interested in the 2020 election compared to 2016.“We need our elected leaders to come together and provide targeted relief to the industries of small businesses that have been most deeply impacted, and that doesn't necessarily mean financial help although that's required as well,” Mikulin said. “All we’d like to do is keep our doors open and people employed.
