SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High School sports in the fall has been a big question mark due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and next week, the California Scholastic Federation is expected to make a decision as to whether the students athletes will be taking the field. But one local head coach is encouraging parents to step up, and voice their opinion on the matter. Scripps Ranch football coach Marlon Gardinera, has formed "Letfamiliesdecide.org"."So if everybody really wants the kids in school, what we have to do is give them a voice in letting them get back to high school sports. As an example, at Scripps Ranch High School, ninety-four percent of the families said not only do they want their kids back in school, but they want them on campus."Currently, coach Gardinera says the number of players has increased at the Falcons summer's workouts"Parents are deciding they want their kids on campus. Thirty percent more of them are sending their kids out to football this summer. The kids have been cooped up in the house, and parents want them participating in a controlled activity."Of course with safety being the number one priority."We take everyone's temperature, and we ask them five symptom related questions before we let them loose. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and friends of a disabled Clairemont woman are making a plea for the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who left her with serious injuries.Last week, a beaming Delores Odom appeared at a surprise party for her 59th birthday. One of the attendees was her friend and neighbor Maritza Gates. "She was so happy that day. It breaks my heart to see her in the hospital now in so much pain," said Gates. On Saturday just before 6:30 p.m., Odom decided to take a walk to grab dinner. She was crossing westbound on Genesee Avenue in the south crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle that had been going westbound on Derrick Drive and made a left turn to southbound Genesee Avenue, according to police.Odom's daughter Brianna says her mother broke her back in two places. Odom has feeling in her toes, but still faces possible paralysis and requires complicated back surgery. Her recovery and rehabilitation is made more challenging because of a decades-old diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. "There's a special place for people like that. I don't understand how you could hurt someone and then leave them. My mom is one of the nicest people ever. You don't know someone's story when you leave them to die on the street," she said.Police say there is no description of the vehicle and are looking for witnesses. San Diego (KGTV) -- Hotel guest jolted awake after the Howard Johnson by Wyndham caught fire, early Tuesday morning.The fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on El Cajon Blvd in the College East neighborhood.One of the rooms was destroyed, and two others were severely damaged, according to firefighters. At least 4 to 5 units are reported to be uninhabitable for various reasons.It took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.One man staying in the unit right next to the fire, told ABC 10News he had to run right past the flames to escape.The entire hotel was evacuated, and everyone managed to get out safely. No one was hurt.Firefighters are trying to figure out if anyone was inside the unit when it caught fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the second time in as many weeks, several train cars derailed near the downtown San Diego area.The BNSF Railway Company says 19 cars derailed at about 9:40 p.m. Friday while traveling at slow speeds. The train cars were carrying automobiles.The backup continued into Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of military members on the USS Bonhomme Richard set up a lemonade stand over the weekend to raise money for the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society.Becca Kofonow and her three children set up shop on the Siver Strand Saturday morning. It's been a hard week.
