SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Nearly 200 volunteers are working in Logan Heights fixing up homes for families. One of those volunteers is Alexandra Pasquale. She believes this isn't just about grabbing tools and doing work, this is about families in the community.She's glad she can help them, "create their own wonderful memories, providing an environment they can have family meals in." Pasquale is part of Realty Income. The real estate company has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity. They will build 11 homes.As teams they're building fences, painting, and installing plywood. Pasquale says knowing who they are helping makes all the work worth it."It makes me feel so great that we're contributing to our community in a positive way," said Pasquale. 751

San Diego (KGTV)- The entertainment world is left in shock after the death of Chadwick Boseman. The Hollywood star lost his battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying. San Diego (KGTV)- Homes and businesses aren't the only things being affected by power shut-offs Thursday. Traffic lights are also out, and it's causing a lot of confusion for drivers. Just before 10 a.m., a crash happened at the intersection of Poway Road and Highway 67, where the traffic lights had no power. A car slammed into the side of an SUV. Good Samaritans ran through traffic to assist and call 911. Both drivers are expected to be okay. Hours earlier, traffic backed up for about half a mile during the morning rush hour. Drivers were confused about their turn to go. "A lot of these people have been coming to this intersection for 30-plus years," says Deputy Nicholas McGregor. "They have an expectation that when they get here, it's going to be smooth, flow traffic. So when the lights go out, I think it's a hazard."Wednesday night, a car rammed into the back of a truck after power was shut off at the intersection of Scripps Poway Parkway and Highway 67. The car burst into flames moments after the crash.The Sheriff's Department says there are only about two hours of battery life on the traffic lights after the power is shut off. Deputies try to put as much signage out for drivers but say they should remain cautious. 1247

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An appeals court today overturned a ruling that would have allowed the conditional release of the “Bolder Than Most” rapist, Alvin Quarles. The ruling was issued by the 4th District Court of Appeals Monday. The court said, in part that “Quarles is a serial rapist whose crimes were shockingly brutal and destructive. If he fails after he is conditionally released, considering his past, we shudder to contemplate the consequences of such a failure.”After news broke of the reversal, Dianne Jacob, who serves on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and has been adamantly against the release, spoke out on Twitter. We must continue to fight the placement of sexually violent predators into our communities,” Jacob said in part. The ruling comes after San Diego County Superior Court Judge David M. After his release, he would have undergone treatment through a conditional release program.Gill's ruling followed a series of closed-door hearings that involved testimony from psychiatrists and other experts. Quarles was dubbed the "Bolder Than Most" rapist due to the way he attacked his victims at knifepoint, sometimes forcing the women's husbands or boyfriends to watch. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to committing over a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
