BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met in Beijing Monday with a delegation from the Geneva Association (GA), an insurance economics group, headed by chairman Nikolaus Von Bomhard.Wang hoped the GA board would hold a successful board meeting in Beijing, praising the positive role the organization played in promoting reform of the international insurance industry.China's insurance industry was undergoing rapid and profound changes and development, said Wang. YANGON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- A five-day Myanmar traditional medicine exhibition is underway in Myanmar's former capital of Yangon beginning Thursday, aimed at promoting the development of the country's traditional medicines and disseminating medical knowledge to the public.With over 120 booths, traditional medicine producing companies are displaying their traditional medicine products and producing accessories as well as giving traditional treating service and medical education talks.As the Myanmar traditional medicine is playing a more and more important role in treating diseases in the country, the government urges traditional medicine practitioners to protect and preserve them from depletion and extinction and to ensure their perpetual existence.Myanmar is conducting research on treatment of major diseases -- diabetes, hypertension, malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea and dysentery through traditional medicine.To do research more effectively and on a wider scale to have the Myanmar traditional medicine standardized, the country holds traditional medicine practitioners conference every year to introduce the country's traditional medicines and its medical practices and the last conference, which was the 11th, took place in Nay Pyi Taw in December 2010.At the same time, the practitioners are also urged to strive for the promotion of the standard of Myanmar traditional medicine to reach international level.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- America's first full face transplant recipient, Dallas Wiens, made his first public appearance at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, according to media reports Tuesday.Sporting a goatee and dark sunglasses, Wiens, the 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man, said Monday his new face feels natural just weeks after a 15-hour procedure that gave him a nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves. Wiens said he was able to smell again and breathe through his nose normally, adding his 4-year-old daughter told him when she saw him after the operation: "Daddy, you're so handsome."  Wiens lost all of his features and eyesight in November 2008 after hitting a power line while painting a church and underwent the transplant in March, 2011. The operation was paid for by the U.S. Department of Defense which gave the hospital a 3.4 million dollar research grant for five transplants.Surgeons said the transplant was not able to restore his sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he will probably have only partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead."The most fun part is to see the next six to nine months when the function will start to come back and when Dallas will start to feel a light touch on his face," plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac said. "To me, that's really exciting."About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in China, the U.S., France and Spain.

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's civil affairs ministers visited survivors of last year's 7.1-magnitude Yushu earthquake and Zhouqu mudslide prior to China's lunar new year.Dou Yupei, vice minister of Civil Affairs, led a team to Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province to visit quake survivors and local cadres beginning on Sunday.Dou told Xinhua that quake survivors in Yushu now had access to food, clothing, safe drinking water, shelters and medical services, and the reconstruction of quake-damaged houses was well underway.Further, the ministry has distributed 45,000 cotton-padded tents to Yushu to house survivors during the extremely cold winter on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.So far, 160,000 tents have been set up to assure that all survivors have a roof overhead, according to the ministry's statement issued Wednesday.Yushu was jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14, leaving 2,200 people dead and 220,000 local residents affected.Another vice minister, Sun Shaocheng, visited survivors from a massive mudslide that left 1,700 people dead or missing in Zhouqu, Gansu province.To provide warm shelters to survivors, the Zhouqu county government invested three million yuan (455,000 U.S. Dollars) in renovating vacant school buildings or installing facilities in newly-built apartments.All survivors who previously had taken shelter in make-shift tents were relocated to these buildings before Oct. 13, according to the ministry's statement.

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Many children in the U.S. live in poverty and their physical and mental health is not ensured as nearly one in four children struggles with hunger, according to a report on the U.S. human rights record released by China on Sunday.The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2010 was released by the Information Office of China's State Council in response to the country reports on Human Rights Practices for 2010 issued by the U.S. Department of State.The poverty rate increased for children younger than 18 to 20.7 percent in 2009, up 1.7 percentage points from that in 2008, the report quoted figures from the U.S. Census Bureau as saying.The report pointed out that violence against children is very severe in the country, citing figures from the official website of Love Our Children USA that every year over three million children are victims of violence reportedly and the actual number is three times greater.More than 93,000 children are currently incarcerated in the United States, and between 75 and 93 percent of children have experienced at least one traumatic experience, including sexual abuse and neglect, the report said.According to the report, pornographic content is rampant on the Internet and severely harms American children as seven in 10 children have accidentally accessed pornography on the Internet and one in three has done so intentionally.
