They often lead you to a fake website, either from an internet search or a fake email that popped into your inbox. The fake website, which often looks like the real website, asks for the gift card number and the pin/security code. Once you click submit on the fake site, the scammers have all the information and can start using it and your gift money is gone. But this year's scams don't just affect gift cards. As technology gets smarter, like our computers and smart TVs, scammers are turning into hackers to get to your personal information. Before you even start using that new smart TV, computer or other piece of technology, make sure you update it. The prompts will usually appear on the screen or you can find them inside the "settings" or "about" windows on the device. Also, make sure you register the device to your email address. That won't just help with the warranty, it will also make sure you get email updates if there are security breaches. The Ark may have been constructed to withstand 40 days and 40 nights of flooding, but Northern Kentucky’s Ark Encounter property did not fare as well as Noah’s original construction when rains hit the area.Court documents filed in District Court show that the owners of the Ark Encounter in Northern Kentucky have filed a suit against their insurance company after flood and storm damage.Crosswater Canyon Inc. alongside the Ark Encounter, have filed suit against multiple defendants who comprise the business’ insurance underwriters after their property was damaged by heavy rains.According to the suit, heavy rains caused a landslide and some structural support damage near the Ark exhibit.“Subsequent to heavy rains, a significant landslide occurred along portions of the slope, which eliminated the structural support for the roadway, caused significant damage to the road surface itself and the incorporated improvements, and rendered portions of the road unsafe and unfit for use,” reads the suit.Engineers fixed the roadway at a cost of about million. But when the Ark Encounter asked for their insurance to cover the repairs, they were disappointed.Initially, the suit alleges, the defendants cited faulty craftsmanship as the reason for the property damage and stated they were not liable. After an appeal, they conceded that only a small amount was covered by the policy.“By refusing to pay all but a very small proportion of Plaintiffs’ covered claim, the Defendants have failed to meet their Policy obligations and failed to handle Plaintiffs’ claim properly and in good faith, causing Plaintiffs to incur significant additional loss and expense,” reads the suit.The Ark Encounter is seeking damages. The city of El Paso, Texas spent the day grieving and paying respects to the victims killed in a mass shooting Saturday. Multiple vigils were held in the city, honoring the 20 people who lost their lives after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall. Police received calls reporting a gunman in the area just after 10:30 a.m. local time.Bishop Jesus Ibarra held a special mass Sunday at La Paz Faith Memorial and Spiritual Center. “It hurts me to see the extent of violence, especially when it’s people who have nothing to do with the events that happened,” Bishop Ibarra said.The shooting hit the community hard. Twenty roses were displayed for the 20 lives lost in the attack. It’s a scene the bishop could have witnessed in person had he followed his usual routine. “That’s my Walmart,” he explained. “Every first Saturday of the month, I go stock up. I’m there from 9 to 11:30, but I didn’t go that day.” Members of the community gather at the vigils, looking for ways they can help.“Pretty tough, but all we can do now is remain together and don’t change who we are as people,” said the bishop, as he wiped away his tears.Perches Funeral Home, which is part of the La Paz Faith church, is working to help the families of the victims. “Everyone is putting their own part, so we are going to be offering the family free services for their loved ones,” said Jorge Ortiz with the funeral home.Ortiz says the El Paso community is based off love and unity, and love is needed more than ever in El Paso. “Without love, there is nothing,” said Bishop Ibarra. “We are nothing.” 1607
