San Diego County’s beautiful landscape, sunshine, activities and theme parks drew 35 million tourists to the region in 2018. When Porch.com tallied the number of staycation hashtags around the country, Carlsbad came in third for locals finding another world in their own backyard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside.Police say Rodney Cole left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Leslie Saenz, get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Monday night Cole explained the terrifying ordeal to 10News.His 8-year-old daughter, Malaiha, told police she was able to call the police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother Jackson had been kidnapped. "They said, '911 whats your emergency?' and I said, 'me and my little brother got kidnapped,'" Malaiha said. "and (police) said, 'where are you and what can you see?' and I said, 'signs for the Mexico border.'""(The woman) tried to take the phone away from me but I moved away from her, and she said, 'give it to me, or I’m going to drive in circles and take this car and crash into the freeway wall.'"That's when she gave the phone to the woman, but the police acted quickly.  Roughly 30 minutes later after the car was stolen, Border Patrol detained the woman as she was trying to cross the border into Mexico.  Police have since taken Saenz into custody.Cole told 10News he bought the phone for the kids a few months ago, but it's not an activated line. He taught Malaiha how to call 911 on the phone, in case of emergencies. "I'm very proud of her," he said. 1616

San Diego (KGTV)- A high school teen decided to use his passion for science and astronomy to create a virtual space camp. The teen hopes to spark the interest of kids around the county and beyond.Ryan Clairmont is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy High School. He says his interest in astronomy started at a young age.“I remember when I was 6 or 7 years old, I went to the Palomar observatory,” says Clairmont. “I was able to look through their 60-inch telescope at Jupiter and the moon. It was an eye-opening experience for me.”The teen had plans to participate in a bio-physics internship this summer, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.“At that point, I realized there must be a lot of other children in San Diego and across the country, whose in-person summer programs have been canceled for the summer.”That’s when Clairmont created Cosmoto, a free virtual space for kids.Each day kids will learn about a different space topic and participate in hands-on science experiments and activities. All of the materials for the activities are low-cost items you can find at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Senator and Vice-Presidential nominee Kamala Harris is scheduled to speak virtually at a San Diego event Saturday night.San Diego Mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said in a news release that Harris will serve as the keynote speaker at the San Diego County Democratic Party’s Roosevelt Honors.Harris endorsed Gloria in his Mayoral bid in November of 2019.“I have been honored to welcome her to San Diego multiple times in-person and I am honored to have the opportunity to do so again – this time virtually – and as the next Vice President of the United States,” Gloria said. 604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While California's new regional stay-at-home order forces many business sectors to close or adjust restrictions, the state is encouraging residents to continue outdoor recreation safely.In the new order, the state says, "to promote and protect the physical and mental well-being of people in California, outdoor recreation facilities may continue to operate." The order adds that outdoor recreation facilities cannot sell food or drink on-site. Overnight stays at campgrounds are also banned. "Outdoor gyms meet the essential workforce definition of an outdoor recreational facility for the purpose of facilitating personal health through physically distanced outdoor exercise and may continue operations."In the City of San Diego, golf courses and pools that are already open can stay open, but reservations will be required.While parks and preserves remain open, playgrounds — outdoor and indoor — must close under the health order. Though at times outdoors, museums, zoos, aquariums, and family entertainment centers must also close.Outdoor recreation facilities will still require social distancing and mask-wearing, county and state public health officials say. The new regional stay-at-home order will last for at least three weeks starting Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m., until the county is approved to move back to the state's blueprint for reopening tier system. 2148
