SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman known for helping others got the gift of a new smile Wednesday.Twyla Green got a life-changing surgery and a new set of teeth as the lucky winner of the Smile Again program."You can do anything as long as you put your mind to it,” Green said. “God sends people that will help you.”The initiative, hosted by Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Specialists of San Diego, offers the community suffering from poor oral health the opportunity to apply a free ,000 smile.They tell 10News Twyla was selected out of more than 200 San Diegans.Twyla says she’s lived her life taking care of other people; this opportunity is a way to help allow her to feel the confidence she helps others achieve. 731

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 14 months on the job, Gordon Walker, the CEO of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless is taking a six month leave to help open a temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome, Italy.Walker was hired in June of 2017 after successfully reducing the homeless population in Utah by 91%.“We can do the exact same thing here,” he told 10News. “The chronic homeless problem here in San Diego is not much larger that it was in Utah.”He took over the RTFH just after it had been consolidated with several other agencies.One of his first big projects was overhauling an outdated software system that is used by many different agencies that interact with the homeless.Expected to be launched in December, he says the new program will allow for easier and more streamlined data collection.It’s an important change because they can’t fight a problem when they don’t know exactly what it consists of.“We had a hard time answering some very basic questions, like ‘what do we actually need?’ “For this purpose, one of the task force’s yearly projects is executing a ‘point-in-time’ count of homeless people across the county.When the numbers were released this year, however, they were met with criticism.“You cant just not count 1000 to 2000 people just because you haven’t done your due diligence when we’ve counted them every year,” said Michael McConnell, a homeless advocate and former member of the RTFH.He’s referring to the homeless population that live in vehicles.Because they were not included in the 2018 count of unsheltered homeless, the number appeared to decline from the previous year.Walker still defends their decision, saying “here in San Diego there was a great deal of effort of counting people in vehicles without proving or showing that there was anyone living in the vehicle.”But he said they plan on changing that next year by performing outreach beforehand, so when they encounter vehicles while doing the count they know who lives inside them.“We are going to do more interviewing so we know the people better,” he said.Whether or not he will be back to see that through remains to be seen. He told 10News he plans to spend no more that six months in Italy.“My goal is to come back here, even if it’s not as CEO” he said. “We’re doing some great things.”On Thursday, the board that oversees the RTFH will vote to confirm Tamera Kohler as acting CEO.She worked with Walker in Utah and currently serves as the COO.Walker said he leaves for Italy on Friday. 2522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amid coronavirus fears, retailers in San Diego County and around the world are trimming operating hours to focus on cleaning and restocking. Some stores are even closing until further notice. The shopping frenzy continues as residents prepare to hunker down for weeks at a time. Many not being able to get essentials they so desperately need. "All the toilet papers were gone, and they were limiting the number to one per client," shopper Midori Kato said. Some said they found a way to bypass the chaotic crowds. "Because I live close, like 300 feet from Ralphs, I finally figured out to go at 11:30 or midnight," one man told 10News. But not anymore. Many grocery stores announced they are shortening their operating hours. Von's supermarkets are now open from 7 am to 9 pm. Ralph's parent company, Kroger, announced nationwide, that they will only be open from 8 am to 8 pm to focus on deep cleaning and restocking shelves. Trader Joe's stores began limiting the number of shoppers in their stores. Starting Monday, they will only be open from 9 am to 7 pm. Some shoppers said, instead of rushing into stores and hoarding up supplies, we need to work together. If you have to have a loaf of bread, and your neighbor doesn't have any, give them half," shopper Gloria Mitrovich said. But some companies are not taking any chances and have decided to close their stores entirely. Effective immediately, Apple announced that its retail stores would be closed until March 27, 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After San Diego Street Scene was canceled in 2010, a void was left behind downtown.Acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Beck, Vampire Weekend, M.I.A. converged onto East Village for two days of concerts by more than 40 bands — until they didn't any longer.Now, a new music and arts festival with the backing of local icons Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado is preparing to bring the same excitement and then some back to San Diego's waterfront scene later this year.RELATED: Wonderfront offering free entertainment to San DiegansWonderfront Festival intends to bring more than 70 bands across seven stages on the city's waterfront from Nov. 22-24.
