San Diego (KGTV)- There are no regrets for a San Diego man who risked his life when he stumbled on a wreck in the middle of last week's rainstorm. "If you ask me, I probably would have done it again," says Victor Ruvalcava. On a rainy Wednesday morning, Dec. 4th, Ruvalcava says he saw a car flip over on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley. The young driver was ejected from the car. "I park behind his car, get out to see if he's ok, I asked him hey is there anyone else in the car. He didn't respond," says Ruvalcava. "I look towards the car, and that's when I get hit by the SUV."He was thrown about 100 feet after that SUV slammed into him. Ruvalcava spent days in the hospital with several injuries, which include a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and leg. While in the hospital, he says the young man he stopped to help, and his family came to visit him. He says they were "extremely thankful." CHP says for safety reasons, they don't recommend drivers stopping to help crash victims on a busy freeway. They should call 911. But Ruvalcava says he'd do it all over again. (KGTV) - San Diego County is offering help to families where a grandparent is a sole provider for his/her grandchildren, as that population expands.Through the Department of Health and Human Services, the County offers support groups, events, resources and more to help people in their golden years who are suddenly thrust back into the role of parent.According to the county's website, there are more than 24,000 grandparents in San Diego County who are raising a young child."That's a pretty large number," says Program Manager Tina Emmerick. "But what's really striking for us is we know that's not capturing the whole population."Emmerick says the reasons grandparents wind up providing for their grandchildren vary. In many cases, it's because the parents tested positive for drugs, are incarcerated, have mental health problems or passed away.For the grandparents left to raise the kids, it can be overwhelming."It's difficult," says Martha Lopez. She's been raising her grandson, Jacob since he was born. His mother, Martha's daughter Crystal, tested positive for Methamphetamine during birth and CPS was going to take Jacob away."I didn't want Jake to go anywhere else," says Lopez. "I wanted to make sure that he was well taken care of."I love him, and he deserves the best, and I'm here for him," she says.Lopez says the last six years have been wonderful, raising Jacob as her own. She had to take early retirement from her job at UC San Diego to become a full-time mom again.Jacob has limited contact with his biological mother, who Lopez says still has issues with drugs.Lopez is part of a support group run through the County. It's one of several programs they offer to grandparents raising grandchildren.The county started offering help to this group in 2012. The resources and support have expanded over the years. They now offer four symposiums throughout the year so grandparents can find all the help they need in one place."We can direct them to food banks, legal aid, support groups," says Emmerick. "They're realizing they're not alone in this. There are other families like them. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove.
