SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers are quickly adapting to online lesson plans to engage their students.Third grade teacher Carlisa Flanders said Friday was the first day she'd been back to school since Grant K-8 shut its doors March 13 due to coronavirus concerns.Flanders said the day the school closed was hectic and stressful, "we had a couple hours to hussle. I put together two weeks of work, took as much as I could went home and hunkered down."She was emotional thinking of the future, wondering when she was going to see her students again and when school would reopen.Tuesday was the day she was able to go online, using a program called Zoom, and video conference with her students. She said 18 of the 21 students have been attending school this week.Friday morning, their homework assignment was to bring one thing to share. Many of her students showed off their pets."The majority of my focus is going to be making sure I stay connected with my students, making sure they feel the love," she said, gesturing at a board behind her with the words, 'Good Morning! You are awesome! You are loved!' written in different colored markers.Flanders said right now class is optional and labeled as enrichment. She said Thursday she read a book to the kids.Parents, like mom Leona Smith, said the social interaction from class is exactly what her son has been missing, "that connection he has, and the bonds that he has with his friends and his teacher it's like no other.""I think we forget how much school and their friends and their teachers are part of their everyday life," Smith said.Mrs. Flanders has been working tirelessly to bridge boundaries with online education, "I am now texting, communicating with friends I now have in Georgia, in Texas, in Oregon who are also third grade teachers and I'm collaborating virtually with strangers but their hearts are in the exact same place as mine and we're all just like try this, try this, try this."She said her tech savvy students are also stepping up teaching her tricks, like starting a chat and sharing pictures through the program. 'Our first lesson was how to mute and unmute the microphone,' Mrs. Flanders said.Friday was emotional. Mrs. Flanders said she was glad to go back to school and see fellow teachers' cars in the parking lot, but could only wave hello from a distance. "I got to go back to school for 20 minutes, I got my charts, I got our class mascot, this is happy," she said holding a rainbow hedgehog stuffed animal. She said she also grabbed a large stack of books. She was also happy to get back a semblance of a routine, saying class will start online officially on April 27."Oh gosh, it's mind boggling to think how these grades will actually count towards them finishing the third grade year," Mrs. Flanders said concerned. She's focusing instead on each lesson and the positive impact she can make on her students."At the end of every school day I usually hug, high-five or fist bump my kids, so our first Zoom, we decided this is our new way of hugging," She said making an 'air-hug' gesture, "So to all of you here's a hug. We'll get through this."The San Diego Unified School District said schools will be soft launching online education April 6. That way they can connect students in need with computers and WiFi, so everyone is ready for the hard launch April 27. That means teachers will assign tasks that will be graded. The district said if a student cannot connect online, they will not be penalized and their grade will be frozen. 3523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration has recalled several types of tattoo ink after determining they were contaminated with bacteria. One of them is the popular black ink made by Dynamic Color. The FDA found that two of their lots tested positive for microorganisms. The recall includes all bottles of Scalpaink SC, Scalpaink PA, and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics. One lot of Color Art’s red Solid Ink-Diablo was also included. Tattoo shops across the country were contacted through their local health departments about the recall. One of the largest tattoo parlors in San Diego, SD Tattoo, says they got the email Wednesday morning and immediately searched through their inks. They did have the Dynamic black ink, but tattoo artist Nicki Ninteman said, "We checked all the lot numbers and all of ours are clean, so we’re good."She said they didn't have either of the other two brands in the shop.According to the FDA, people who have been tattooed with contaminated ink can experience rashes or lesions of red papules. If untreated, contaminated ink can also cause permanent scarring. For more information one the FDA recall, visit their website. 1209

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who was hit and killed by an Amtrak train Tuesday night is grieving and hoping he doesn't die in vain.Wentian He, 79, was walking across the train tracks toward the bus stop when he was hit and killed by an Amtrak train, according to his daughter Lilian Zheng. Zheng said her parents were on their way home from shopping.Wednesday, her mother was sobbing, saying she didn't want to live by herself.Zheng said her parents were married 54 years and she saw her dad as a healthy man, young and strong."He really enjoy[ed] learning the streets, the culture, how to behave in this foreign country. He worked really really hard," she said he was part of the Communist Army in China and it took him a while to get 'un-brainwashed'.Her parents emigrated to the U.S. in 2007 and she says they've been enjoying retirement, "They always together go out, they like to go to the senior center, because they can meet new people, they go to the flea market, or small shops so they can find unique stuff."Those trips, now cherished memories.Zheng hopes change can be made at the Washington Street station to protect people like her father. "The two tracks are so close they can cross, there is no [barrier] when Amtrak came, there should be a second gate," suggesting another barrier between the two sets of tracks."I feel life is so fragile, you know he's such a strong father and we've been depending on him," Zheng said tearfully, now they're leaning on each other.Zheng has a sister and niece in China. She hopes to bring her sister to the U.S., so they may fulfill her father's wish to show her the U.S., and bring his remains home to China. 1677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The next time you hop in your car and drive through North Park, you could encounter one of 18 new traffic circles aimed to slow down drivers and promote caution and awareness. The executive director of SANGAG, Hasan Ikhrata, spoke Wednesday about the status of 18 intersection makeovers that include roundabouts similar one off Landis and Utah."It's obvious cars and bikes don't mix well together, especially if there's speeding involved so to overcome these we try our best to do things like this, but also make sure where we can, separate bikes from traffic so residents can bike without fear of being hit by a car," Ikhrata said.So far, million has been dropped for the Georgia Meade & Landis Bikeway project, funded by TransNet. Construction for the new additions are halfway done and although some neighbors aren't so keen about the new roadways, "people who want to go fast do go fast still, they still race. They have enough room to almost go straight through the circle." Others like 11-year North Park resident, Andrea, Linan, already feel more at ease, "traffic on this street especially, people go fast. I do cycling and you just have to be really careful about not getting hit so I don't mind roundabouts."SANDAG said since stay at home orders, the amount of people riding bikes went up 12%. SANDAG's executive director said despite conflicting arguments regarding the amount spent on the Bikeway project, "we have the data to support investing more in the Bikeway program, and I hope San Diego will have a connected network that's safe for our residents."The project has been in the works since 2013. SANDAG said the process included community meetings, public workshops and hearings so neighbors can chime in. 1760
