BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States should keep up communication and consultation on issues concerning each other's major interests such as the Iran nuclear issue and the Korean nuclear issue.Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of the Chinese delegation attending the strategic track of the on-going second round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues (S&ED), made the remarks at a press briefing after the first meeting of the strategic track on Monday."The two countries should also enhance consultation and cooperation on counter-terrorism, non-proliferation and the fight against cross-border crimes," Ma said.On Monday afternoon, officials from China and the United States held two rounds of meetings, during the second half of which they discussed how to strengthen cooperation on major international and regional issues, and cooperation on international system reform and Asia-Pacific regional cooperation mechanism building."The S&ED, as an important platform, provides the two sides a good channel to discuss and consider cooperation in this regard," Ma said.Ma told the press the other four suggestions China proposed for further enhancing bilateral cooperation, including:-- To give full respect and consideration to each other's major interests and concerns while carrying out cooperation;-- To follow the globally-recognized rules guiding international relations, and peacefully resolve regional hot issues through dialogue and negotiation;-- To deal with disputes with an objective and calm attitude, and not to let the overall situation of China-U.S. cooperation deteriorate due to temporary difficulties;-- To expand cooperation, especially communication and consultation in such areas as climate change and energy security, so as to benefit the two countries and the world as a whole. He said mutual understanding and trust between the two countries had increased after the past rounds of strategic dialogues. The two sides have defined their relationship as positive, cooperative, comprehensive and 21st-century-oriented.The military relationship was also an agenda in Monday's talks, despite their bilateral military exchanges being suspended since the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan earlier this year."In the meeting, delegates from the Chinese Liberation Army said the Chinese side always attaches importance to mutual trust and cooperation with the U.S. side. However, respect for each other's core interests is an important basis for the development of a sound and stable China-U.S. military relationship. China will continue military exchanges and cooperation with the United States in the principle of mutual respect, mutual trust, equity and reciprocity," Ma said.Prior in the morning, the two countries' delegates held an hour-long close door meeting of the strategic track. Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton co-chaired the talks.

VANCOUVER, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai's upcoming hosting of the World Expo will be an "unforgettable experience" for local residents, leaving a lasting legacy of international trade that will be of benefit to everyone, according to a former Canadian politician.Grace McCarthy, the British Columbia tourism minister who was largely responsible for bringing the World Expo to Vancouver in 1986, said the hosting of the fair put the Canadian city on the global map, ultimately leading to its successful hosting of the Winter Olympics earlier this year. Now 82 and retired from politics, McCarthy, who heads the Vancouver-based Child Foundation charity which helps children with liver and intestinal disorders, said the spinoffs of the Shanghai expo would be vast, ranging from economic development for the city and the country as a whole, to improving the lives of local residents."Shanghai undoubtedly has strong local government with committees working night and day to make connections around the world. Those connections will pay off because they wouldn't even show up if they didn't plan to have a plant (they wanted built) or wanted to go and help rebuild that area that the expo site is on. There will be international trade which will be a benefit for everybody," she said."The opportunity now for Shanghai is the world gets to know the city, not as a land, but as the land of opportunity. Not as individuals who are hardworking, but individuals who want people to come and stay and live and contribute to the country. That's the essence of a world expo. People will see a very different Shanghai than what they have envisioned. It's a pure learning experience."With a theme of transport and communication, the Vancouver expo previewed a host of technologies that are now commonplace.Demonstrations of the internet were on display nearly a decade before it became commonplace, while inventor Arthur C. Clarke presided over a satellite dinner. With diners sitting in Canada, the famed author of 2001: A Space Odyssey chatted with those assembled via satellite from his Sri Lankan base. There was also a demonstration line of Vancouver's new transportation system with an overhead "Skytrain" moving passengers through the expo site. McCarthy said the Canadian-made system had drawn great interest from Singapore which was looking to improve its own rapid transit at the time. However, they ended up going with Japanese technology."It's that kind of interface and that kind of incentive that assist industry both in Canada and British Columbia. From that point of view it was super successful from educating young people about the world they live and making industrial and commercial contacts. At expos you always see futuristic things."That's what really makes an expo when you can showcase the world. It's a real learning experience for the country hosting. Children would come to expo and they would learn all about China, what they produced, what their educational system was like. Then they would go to another pavilion and find out more. It was a real learning experience because there was something for everyone at expo."McCarthy admits Vancouver's expo experience happened almost by accident. To celebrate the city's 100th anniversary in 1986, she got in contact with the Louvre art gallery in Paris to see about the possibility of touring the Mona Lisa across Canada, but little success. A chance meeting in London with Patrick Reid, who had overseen Canada's interest at six world expos, however, sealed the deal. With a reported budget of 800 million to 1 billion Canadian dollars, the fair was a great success in attracting more than 22 million visitors, but ultimately lost just over 300 million Canadian dollars.Despite the financial loss, McCarthy said the expo was beneficial for the psychology of the country that at the time was emerging from a prolonged recession. In addition, there was a sense of patriotism that swept over Canada."It was very beneficial for the psychology of the country and that's difficult to put dollars to. Everything is not all dollars, but everything in dollars is psychological because if you pour money into a party, an event or something, you can be super successful if you do it right. That's what we did."For a person who doesn't know Shanghai, this is a great learning experience for them. They'll see the excitement of the opportunities, the young people who have come to life in the city and are doing incredible things, they'll see all of that and their perception will change. That's worth an awful lot in the global picture."One area that benefited Vancouver tremendously following the fair was tourism. In 2008, tourism employed more than 131,000 people in the western province making it one of its largest sectors along with forestry, fishing and mining. It had 2008 revenues of more than 13.1 billion Canadian dollars, up 35 percent since 2002, according to Tourism BC statistics. "Expo provided us with a showcase to show the world and the world was very interested in seeing it. We had boom years for tourism after that ... afterwards, the people who came in droves and were interested in coming simply because of the media coverage that went all over the world," McCarthy said."When the whole thing finished the world did know about us. Someday they would like to come to British Columbia, Canada. That was kind of the mantra. And people did come in droves. Tourism was at its peak during those years."She adds, however, that the Shanghai organizer needed to recognize that "a country can't live on parties" alone, they also needed to be serious about the business end of it."The business end of it is just as much the hospitality plan quotient and the business plan quotient together."It is very important that countries envision what they want for the values of their people and what the people themselves want for a very good way of life."

KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added. He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur. China is providing good services in this respect. ""The same thing could be said about the south. We need to concentrate on developing the south and China stands with us in this respect. It is a fruitful cooperation with great benefits," he said.Jailani, meanwhile, commended the strong ties between Khartoum and Beijing, saying that "this relation is deeply-rooted in history and I think what has been achieved now between the two countries is paving the way for a lasting peace in Sudan."The fourth Ministerial Meeting of China-Arab Cooperation Forum will be held on May 13-14 in Tianjin, China. The meeting, with the theme of deepening comprehensive cooperation and realizing common development, would give impetus to the China-Arab friendship. The China-Arab Cooperation Forum was established in 2004.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A research report of China's foreign trade sector Sunday predicted the world's largest exporter would more than double its foreign trade volume by 2020.It also called on China to improve the quality of foreign trade sector and to lower import tariffs to promote the nation's trade balance. The report, launched by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Sunday at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair held in the southern city of Guangzhou, predicted the China's foreign trade volume would hit 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total, while imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total, according to the report, jointly compiled by researchers with think-tanks under the MOC, the Ministry of Finance, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The report was seen by analysts and officials as a "road map" which lays out a theoretical basis for the reforms in China's trade policies and mechanisms over the next decade. The transformation of the foreign trade growth pattern has become an urgent requirement for China in the post-crisis era, said Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan.Weighed on by the global downturn, China's foreign trade contracted to a three-decade low in 2009, with total volume down 13.9 percent year on year to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars.Huo Jianguo, director of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) under the MOC, said the financial crisis has revealed a series of substantial problems hidden behind rosy figures, as the nation's foreign trade has been expanded in an ineffective and imbalanced way, or at the cost of environment pollution.Analysts said the downturn had prompted China to adjust its exports structure, and shift focus on high-end manufacturing, energy-saving and environment-friendly industries and developing modern service industries.Li Gang, a research fellow with the CAITEC and leading writer of the report, said the global downturn has phased out a number of backward and less competitive enterprises while offering great opportunities for innovative enterprises to improve growth structure and strengthen their anti-risk capabilities.Although China reported a a deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars in March, the first time over the past six years, analysts suggested decision makers to further expand imports by lowering tariffs, as a way to ease the nation's trade imbalance.Zhang Peng, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said China should increase imports of high-tech equipments, energy and resource products, and some agriculture and consumption goods in an attempt to address the trade imbalance. The nation's trade surplus has reached 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars over the last three decades, with foreign exchange reserves hitting 2.45 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of March, according to Zhang.Propping up world's economy recovery, China's foreign trade began to grow again in the first quarter, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.China would consolidate its position as a big trade power and make efforts to develop into a strong trader, and it would play a more active role in international trade arena, according to Zhong Shan.
