Dr. Michael Drake became the University of California's first Black president on Tuesday, the Board of Regents announced in a press release.Dr. Drake will replace Janet Napolitano when she steps down in August.“Dr. Drake personifies the qualities we looked for in selecting a new president: He is committed to seeing the whole student and to supporting all our students. He recognizes the incalculable value of faculty and staff to the University’s mission, and he understands the importance of the public and private partnerships that help us achieve that mission,” said John A. Pérez, chair of the UC Board of Regents in the release. “As the first person of color to serve as UC president, Dr. Drake returns to UC at an important point in the University’s journey. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A possible vehicle break-in led to a deadly shooting in the East County early Sunday.El Cajon Police received a report of shots fired just after 1 a.m. near West Chase Avenue in El Cajon. Police said a homeowner was woken up by the sound of his dogs barking in the 1100 block of Mona Place and looked outside to see someone trying to break into his vehicle.The homeowner retrieved his handgun and went outside to confront the 32-year-old suspect, police said.A confrontation between the two occurred and the homeowner shot at the suspect multiple times, police said, striking him at least once.The suspect then took off in his own vehicle and crashed into the driveway of a nearby home in the 1000 block of West Chase Ave. Officers arrived to find him dead of a gunshot wound.Police have not released the identity of the homeowner or suspect. The homeowner is cooperating with officers. It's not yet clear if that person will face any criminal charges as a result of the shooting. 1054

(KGTV) - Surveillance video has recently captured multiple incidents of what appears to be a thief returning over and over to prey upon elderly residents of the Salvation Army apartment building in El Cajon.Apartment staff at the building on South Anza Street say there have been at least five robberies between October and Christmas Eve. Each appears to include the same thief."He's the lowest form of life in my book," building superintendent Alex Harmon told 10News. "To prey on the elderly. They've got walkers for crying out loud."In one incident captured on video, the man approached a 97-year-old woman taking a walk on the sidewalk outside the building. He was seen opening her bag, which was placed on her walker, then removing an item and walking away.The woman later told building staff that he had struck up a conversation about her walker and that she had offered him candy. She says he opened her bag and instead of taking candy, stole her wallet.In a separate incident, the suspected thief and what appears to be a lookout are seen carefully observing an elderly woman walking by. One man then turned and followed her around the corner. She told 10News that's when he raced up and grabbed her gold necklace, breaking off her gold cross, and running off.Multiple police reports have been filed with El Cajon Police Department, which is investigating. 1389

(KGTV) - An upset burglary victim says she didn't get emotional when she saw the surveillance video, until she heard what the intruders did.Just off Applewood Drive around 4 p.m. Sunday, Michele returned home from grocery shopping with her 7-year-old daughter."I saw the bedroom was in complete disarray, grabbed my daughter and said, 'Let's get out of the house right now,'" said Michele.Ring doorbell video shows what happened: three men cased the home, then approached and hopped over her fence. Moments later, the three bag-toting men ripped off the screen of a back window and climbed in.The sound of Michele's dog, a 10-year-old Miniature Schnauzer named Trixie, is heard barking and then there is another noise: a pained whimpering lasting more than five seconds."Something was done to her to cause her pain. It brought me to more tears than knowing we'd been violated," said Michele.About half an hour later, two of the men are seen leaving through the window, swatting at and toppling a camera on the way out.They would make off with electronics, a handgun and dozens of pieces of jewelry, including some priceless family heirlooms. Also gone was Michele's diamond and platinum wedding ring set."There was sentimental value for sure," said Michele.But Michele says she's thankful Trixie wasn't hurt badly. She also says missing the burglars by minutes was a literal blessing because she had stopped at church for a few minutes before coming home.
