SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District is moving forward with plans to build a new elementary school in the Civita neighborhood of Mission Valley.In May, the District approved a plan to purchase land from Civita developer Sudberry Properties. Now, SDUSD has plans ready for a 2-story, 24 classroom campus, full of modern amenities. It will be able to hold 5-600 students."With new development in the area, we expect new families to come in. Those families are going to need an elementary school to attend," says District Facilities Communications Supervisor Samer Naji."Right now if you live in Mission Valley and have a young kid, you gotta drive out of Mission Valley to get them to school and get them from school. So a local school for those families is absolutely necessary," Naji adds.Sudberry has plans to build 5,000 new homes in the neighborhood. That, combined with other development on the north side of Mission Valley, is expected to bring a population boom. The District says they're trying to be ahead of the curve when it comes to having a school ready to serve the area.The new school will be on the corner of Civita Boulevard and Via Alta, just west of the new Civita Park. Right now, the land is occupied by a small grassy area and a dog park."The idea was to locate the school in a central location for the community that was really kind of civic heart or the social hub of the community," says Sudberry VP Marco Sessa. "We tried to create an environment here where really you can live, play, and work. A school is a big component of that."People who live in Civita say they're excited about the news, but also want to make sure it lives up to high academic standards."It's all about the level of education," says Russell Pontone. "It's one thing to build a beautiful building. But are you going to have the best teachers there? What kind of programs and resources are actually going to be available?"The District has not said how much it will cost to build the new school. Money from Proposition Z and local development impact fees will pay for the construction. The District plans to begin building in the spring of 2020 and have the school ready to open in the fall of 2022. 2219

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego rolls out the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple carpet in July for thousands of people who will be attending the Pride Festival headlined by Melissa Etheridge. The event, held Saturday and Sunday July 13 and 14, will take place at Balboa Park’s Marston Point on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street. Festivalgoers can enjoy performances from more than 100 entertainers on multiple stages, food booths, vendors, and exhibits. General admission is for a weekend pass, with discounts available online before the event. Teens and children high-school aged and younger can get into the festival for free. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Strong Santa Ana winds moved through San Diego County Tuesday, toppling a big rig as it traveled on Interstate 8 near Alpine. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Willows Road, blocking the left lane for about an hour and a half, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt reported. Another semi overturned on Interstate 15 in Fontana. San Diegan Bashar Shebo was driving through the area on his way to Las Vegas. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather “So crazy man, the car was going left and right, left and right like this, barely could control it,” said Bashar Shebo. “We just saw a trailer was flipped over on the side.” The High Wind Warning was in effect through 10 p.m. for the mountain areas, with a Wind Advisory for the inland communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld guests are getting their first look at a sea otter pup recently rescued in Alaska and taken in by San Diego staff for care.Cinder, an orphaned sea otter brought to SeaWorld earlier this month from Alaska, has nearly doubled in weight and has been hitting all the developmental milestones for her age, the theme park said. Veterinarians have been caring for the pup around the clock, the park says, and she has been adjusting well to her new home.RELATED: Orphaned sea otter pup brought from Alaska to SeaWorld's careCinder is viewable just in time for Sea Otter Awareness Week. SeaWorld keepers will be hosting presentations about otters and ways to public can help in their care in the wild through Saturday.The young pup arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center underweight and dehydrated, before being transferred to San Diego. Cinder's now weighs a little more than 10 pounds, feeding on a special sea otter milk formula every three hours.Guests can view Cinder periodically throughout the day at the Otter Outlook nursery.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed Cinder non-releasable, so SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care. She is expected to be introduced to the park's other resident female sea otters — Mocha, Coco, Clover and Pumpkin, who range in age from five to nine years old — who were also orphaned. 1393
