SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A rare sight in Belmont Park - giant stuffed animals riding a historic roller coaster. According to the amusement park, the stuffed animals are being used the test the Giant Dipper. A spokesperson with the park says people passing through enjoyed catching a glimpse of the tests.The dipper has to be tested daily, but amid the coronavirus, the park had to get creative and decided to load the train up with massive stuffed animals. The tests come ahead of the coasters 95th birthday this July 4. The Giant Dipper was built by the Prior and Church Company in 1925 amid the Golden Age of wooden roller coasters, the park says. In 1976, the entire park closed due to financial difficulties. After the park closed, a group of San Diegans formed a Save the Coaster Committee and obtained a state historic preservation grant to help start the restoration, the park says. Later, in 1990, the San Diego Coaster Company was formed, signing a lease with the City of San Diego to restore the coaster. At last, it was restored at a cost of million, according to the park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A pursuit sparked an officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach late Saturday night. According to police, officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road. Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers. “Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release. At some point during the pursuit, the suspect threw a handgun out of the truck. The woman has since been located while police continue to search for the suspect. Homicide detectives have been called to investigate due to an officer firing his weapon, police say. It’s unclear whether or not the suspect was hit. Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. No officers were injured. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Sunday morning after California Highway Patrol says his car flipped over before slamming into a tree in National City. According to CHP, the crash happened around 3 a.m. on I-805 south near Plaza Boulevard. Officers say the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and flipped several times before hitting the tree. The crash was the second deadly collision on the 805 south in two days. Saturday morning, a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle on I-805 south near the I-8 connector. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit was filed on Monday in San Diego County Superior Court against the County of San Diego, Registrar of Voters and other entities related to the ongoing battle over the future of the Julian volunteer fire department. Attorney and mayoral candidate Cory Briggs filed the suit and told 10News that the claim is that a group of former volunteer fire department board members made the decision to dissolve the department in secret meetings, and the County allegedly let it happen. For the past two years, locals have been in a contentious battle over the future of San Diego County's last all-volunteer fire department. Many residents believe the County should take over the department because it has more resources and money.Opponents don't trust the County and think that the department's volunteers can do a better job on their own. This morning, an independent regulatory agency conducted a final vote in favor of dissolving the department. A hearing on this new lawsuit is scheduled for Wednesday morning. 1041
