SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As an active 45-year-old man who loves to surf and take adventures with his daughter, Bryce Olson was the last person his friends expected to get cancer. In 2014, a call while at work confirmed it: stage IV metastatic prostate cancer.Metastatic means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, lymph nodes, bones or other organs.“It was just shocking and sad and I didn’t know anything about this stuff, so I just...I rolled into whatever my doctors were recommending," said Olson. He says the standard of care - surgery, chemotherapy, and the initial hormone therapy - wasn't working.“I started coming to terms with my own mortality. I didn’t even think I’d see my kid get out of elementary school and I was losing hope," said Olson.Olson says he wanted to make his final days count. The Intel employee started learning about precision medicine and eventually pursued DNA sequencing to find out exactly what was driving his disease.“I'm a believer in profiling your tumor at a molecular level and trying to understand what’s driving your unique disease, and then taking that data and then finding the right drug for the right person at the right time," said Olson. His results led him to a clinical trial in Los Angeles, where he was a perfect molecular match for the drug being tested.Four years later, Olson's precision medicine journey led him to San Diego's Epic Sciences.“We're actually going to a place where no test has gone before," said Murali Prahalad, President and CEO of Epic Sciences. "These are metastatic patients; the disease has already spread. And we’re trying to understand in the later stages of the disease when it’s far more complicated, how do you then understand which treatment is the right one.”Patients like Olson have two treatment options, chemotherapy or hormone therapy."It's very important to know which medicine is going to work," said Pascal Bamford, Chief Scientific Officer of Epic Sciences, "At the metastatic end of this disease every week, every day, every month is critically important."The company has created a blood test to make the choice easier, called the Oncotype DX AR-V7 Nucleus Detect. If the antigen AR-V7 is detected in a patient, they have built a resistance to hormone therapy, meaning chemotherapy would likely be a better treatment option.“We think it’s very groundbreaking, to say this is the first test that can tell a patient which drug to go on to extend their life," said Ryan Dittamore, Chief of Medical Innovation.Dittamore says the test helps provides certainty for doctors. Patients they've studied have almost doubled their life expectancy with the AR-V7 test.“It can mean the world, not only to patients but loved ones," said Dittamore.Olson was AR-V7 negative, meaning he could continue hormone therapy.Four months in, it's working. “I’m going to see my kid not only get out of high school but college and get married. I’m fully confident that I can do that because I’m just going to keep pushing," said Olson. In December 2018 the AR-V7 test will be covered by Medicare, meaning thousands of more men will have access to it. 3150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attention is now turning to the southern border after Wednesday's border closure with Canada. On Thursday, the walkway into Tijuana was nearly empty but the San Ysidro Port of Entry remains open, for the time being. “It's going to have major implications for us, particularly for us here in Southern California, if we see a closing of the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Dr. David Shirk with the University of San Diego, where he works as a professor with an area of expertise in U.S.-Mexico relations. RELATED: Senate GOP to unveil stimulus plan that includes ,200 payments for most AmericansShirk says that if the U.S. proceeds with any closure, not only will families be separated, but there will also be a major shortage of supplies like foods that are harvested in Baja and transported north. “Something that the federal government needs to take into consideration is that our economy is critically interlinked with Mexico,” he adds.As of Thursday morning, there were only 118 reported cases of COVID-19 in Mexico. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been criticized in recent days for not taking enough containment measures. Video on the Washington Post's website shows him shaking hands at a big rally last Saturday and kissing a supporter. RELATED: San Diego County Westfield malls close 'majority of its operations' amid outbreakThursday, he tweeted out from a press conference to act calmly, disseminate official information and adopt hygiene measures. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that he has requested for the State of Baja to adopt the same precautionary measures that are being taken in San Diego. This Wednesday, the Mayor of Tijuana decided to cancel events with more than 100 people. Schools in Tijuana are reportedly now closed. RELATED: San Diego and national closures, cancellations, postponements due to COVID-19Shirk says Mexico has likely been slower to respond to the pandemic out of fears over its own economy. “I think there's real concern in the López Obrador Administration that an overly drastic response to the coronavirus crisis could cripple Mexico's economy and that has to do with the fact that for the last couple of years Mexico's growth rate has basically remained about flat," Shirk. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent 10News a statement about any possible plans for a border closure:“What we can say right now is that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) highest priority is to ensure the health, safety and security of our workforce and the American people. CBP agents and officers will maintain situational awareness while identifying individuals who have traveled from or transited through countries affected by COVID-19. CBP continues to process cargo as there has been no identified threat as it relates to cargo shipments.CBP officers use a combination of traveler history records, questioning, observation, and self-declarations to further identify individuals requiring enhanced health screening by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, all CBP ports of entry are following the same operational guidance as issued by Presidential Proclamations and the Department of Homeland Security. If CBP observes a traveler with symptoms of COVID-19, we will refer them to the (CDC) and or DHS medical contractors for enhanced health screening. CDC personnel are responsible for the enhanced health screening of travelers in all locations nationwide.CBP has issued guidance to all employees that outlines the current comprehensive use of Personal Protective Equipment including guidance regarding wearing masks in the appropriate circumstances. (using a risk-based approach).” 3711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As counties across the state are able to reopen, some are seeing COVID-19 case numbers bounce back up.There's concern from business owners that the state's current approach to restrictions could put them in a constant state opening and closing. Forty miles east of San Diego is the small community of Descanso."I was born and raised in Descanso," said Melanie Schlumpberger.Staying true to her roots, Descanso is where Schlumpberger opened her small business, Americutz Salon."It was going great," Schlumpberger said. "I was super busy getting new clients all the time."Then came COVID-19 and the stay at home order."It was very hard not knowing how long we were going to be closed down for," she said.Schlumpberger said savings got her through until she could reopen, but that ended up being short-lived. Cases in San Diego County spiked, and a few weeks later, her doors closed again. She said after being closed for another six weeks, she could reopen under the new state's guidelines."It was really exciting when we got to open back up," said Schlumpberger. Then college started, some county metrics spiked, and business could once again be impacted."I don't want to close down again cause it's so hard," she said. "I don't want to lose all the stuff that I've worked for."Schlumpberger said her operation is safe, and there have been very few cases of COVID-19 in Descanso and the surrounding areas.According to the County of San Diego's COVID-19 dashboard cases by residence, San Diego has more than 19,000 confirmed cases. The county's data show Descanso has 12."If the county numbers go up, unfortunately, the businesses countywide have to adjust," said San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond. He says you can look at any county across the state and find a similar issue. Desmond says instead of ping-ponging people's lives, some decisions should be made at the local level."If a business is able to operate safely and follow all the safety protocols and we can enforce those safety protocols, then they should be able to open," he said.Reporter Adam Racusin asked California's Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly if there should be a different approach for areas in counties not as impacted by COVID-19."Something we've long considered," Ghaly said. "You know we work very closely at the countywide level. We have throughout this entire response had many counties step forward and highlight exactly what your statement highlighted that we have differential levels of transmission throughout the different parts of the county. We continue to work with the county to figure out where those trends, especially those upward trends, where we might intervene, but certainly our approach has been county by county, countywide. We look forward to continuing to work with the San Diego leadership both on the health and the elected side to make sure that we do make the right decisions for that county broadly speaking, and we'll be looking forward to the upcoming week and those conversations."Ghaly said the state does empathize with the concern of the business owners and the idea of opening up just a few weeks ago to close back down.Schlumpberger is worried if her businesses is impacted again, it might not survive."I've put so much money and time into building my business and to just lose it because they keep closing us down again is not fair," she said.San Diego officials formally asked the governor to not include SDSU case numbers in the county’s overall total, however during a press conference Wednesday, Gov. Newsom said a special exemption would not be considered."You can't isolate, as if it's on an island, the campus community that is part of a larger community. So the answer is no," Newsom said. 3764
