SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Heavy rain brought lightning and flooding to some areas of San Diego, submerging vehicles in some parts of the county.In Coronado, several vehicles became submerged on 1st St. soon after the rain began to pour. In one instance, a local helped to push a stalled vehicle out of the flooded area. Other vehicles had to wait until the water subsided in order to drive out of the area.Signs were eventually posted along 1st St. warning drivers of flooded areas. SATURDAY FORECASTElsewhere Friday, scattered lightning and thunder prompted delays to SDSU football's?game at SDCCU Stadium. In Oceanside lightning struck a palm tree, setting it on fire, viewer video showed.Power outages also hit areas of San Diego, including a major one in North San Diego County. Hail was also spotted in downtown San Diego.Scattered showers are expected throughout the county Saturday, tapering off in the evening hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the entire month of October, all kids 11-years-old or younger can visit the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park for free.The zoo is offering free entry from Oct. 1 to 31, adding that surprise activities will also be scheduled through the weekends. The offer is valid for one paying adult and up to 5 children (ages 11 and younger).Both zoos will require that all visitors continue wearing facial coverings and cooperate with regulations around the coronavirus pandemic. The zoos have been operating at limited capacity and some experiences are still closed during the partial reopening.Throughout October, the zoos will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Gusty Santa Ana winds and dry conditions prompted the National Weather Service to declare a Red Flag Warning for parts of San Diego County.A Fire Weather Watch was initially set to take effect Thursday, but NWS officials -- citing Santa Ana winds and low humidity -- updated the declaration into a Red Flag Warning.The warning is scheduled to take effect Thursday at 10 a.m. and will expire at 10 p.m. Friday. As a result, Cal Fire is increasing staffing this week. LATEST WEATHER FORECASTNWS officials said, “Santa Ana winds will develop Thursday with peak winds arriving Thursday night into Friday morning before gradually decreasing Friday afternoon and evening. A very dry air mass will spread into southern California on Thursday with lowest daytime humidity on Friday around 5 percent.”According to NWS officials, the Red Flag Warning will impact the San Diego region’s mountain and inland valleys.“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly with extreme fire behavior possible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Extended construction work next to Friars Road has drivers wondering when the Mission Valley street will be back to normal.What is normally a four-lane road is now two, as SANDAG completes an million project. Crews are taking out a bridge with one track on it and replacing it with three bridges and four tracks. Two tracks will serve the Coaster and heavy freight trains. The other tracks are for the blue line trolley to La Jolla. “Every day that I have to pass this, it's just an eyesore,” said Katherine Whitley, who has spent two years driving through construction. “It clogs traffic. Everybody knows Friars Road has grown and grown and this isn't the right place for this to be.”RELATED: Gas main break prompts SR-163 closure in Mission ValleyBicyclists are also concerned about construction danger.“The cars going that way are passing me going 55 miles an hour about three feet away from me. So it feels pretty sketchy,” said Greg Zackowski.SANDAG said it is doing everything it can to minimize the impact of construction.
