CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Parents in Chula Vista are horrified after finding out that dozens of children are taking part in what is being called an after-school fight club. Alain Tripp has lived across the street from Bonita Vista Middle School for more than a decade. Once the bell rings, he sees students walk along the canyon trail to go home. But lately, he has been noticing something else. “Every so often I see a group of 15-20 kids. They’ll be standing there and fighting,” Tripp said.Tripp is not the only one who has seen fighting just off campus.Other neighbors said they had witnessed dozens of kids running down the trail on minimum-day Fridays, to participate in organized fights at Discovery Park. One Bonita Vista Middle School student’s mother sent 10News a photo of what appears to be many students scattering after one of the so-called fights. Parents said the students then upload fight videos onto a secret Instagram account, seeking internet fame.“They just see a lot of people who are Youtube famous… A famous Youtuber popping up in their heads and stuff,” Tripp said. “I feel like every year, kids are trying to grow up faster.”Some neighbors told 10News that they have tried to stop the alleged fights, but they say these keep happening. Now, the school is stepping in. 10 News got a copy of the letter sent to parents from Bonita Vista Middle School Principal, Teresa Kramer. 1457

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old who reportedly made a social media threat against Bonita Vista High School was arrested Tuesday, police say. According to police, officials discovered that the juvenile was responsible for the second of two threats against the school. "The juvenile told police that he had seen the first threat online and decided to 'join-in' to further scare people. He said he thought it would be funny," police said. The teenager was arrested for making criminal threats and is expected to be released to his parents. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are searching for a possible arsonist after two brush fires burned part of Otay river bottom Friday afternoon. Fire crews responded around 2 in the afternoon to the area south of Main Street and east of Broadway. While crews were working to put out the fire, they received a call of a second fire in the same location. The second fire presented more difficulties because of its location. Batallion Chief David Albright tells 10News, "it was kind of down in the slough, in the river bottom, so we were able to bring in a helicopter and make some water drops". Multiple water drops were made and fire crews had both fires out within an hour. Chula Vista police are continuing their search for a possible arsonist. They believe there could be a connection to one of the homeless individuals living near the Otay River bottom. San Diego County sheriffs also sent up their helicopter to look for a suspect in the brush but were unsuccessful. 985

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. Four others are also facing various charges in connection with the attempted theft.RELATED: 2 Tijuana police officers among group charged in Chula Vista home burglaryTestimony at Torres' preliminary hearing indicated the defendants were told two unarmed individuals would be inside the three-bedroom home, which was actually being rented by the FBI for the operation.The criminal complaint alleges Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 33, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, who traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres allegedly "provided counter-surveillance" at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance at the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and "entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house," the complaint alleges.The men had allegedly planned to tie up the two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home, according to testimony.The defendants are due back in court June 30 for a readiness conference. 2022
