SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez said Monday she will propose extending the city's COVID-19-related eviction moratorium through next March.Gomez will ask for council support at Tuesday's scheduled council meeting to extend the deadline until March 31, according to a statement from her office.The city's current moratorium, which prohibits landlords from evicting renters and small businesses that are unable to cover their rent or lease payments due to financial hardship brought about by the pandemic, is slated to expire Sept. 30.Gomez says the pandemic's impacts have not yet declined enough to warrant lifting the moratorium this fall, particularly with 0 weekly federal unemployment benefits set to expire at the end of the month."When we passed the eviction moratorium in March, I hoped that six months would be enough for renters and small businesses to recover from the economic effects of COVID-19, or that our federal government would provide sufficient relief," Gomez said. "Unfortunately, the pandemic is not subsiding, unemployment remains high, many businesses are still struggling, and the federal government's response has been woefully inadequate. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country.The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is today investigating a fatal freeway crash in San Diego, authorities said.As of 3:35 a.m., multiple CHP units were still at the scene of the traffic collision in San Diego that shut down the five right lanes of the westbound Mission Valley (8) Freeway east of Mission Gorge Road and Fairmount Ave, according to a CHP dispatcher.At least one person has died, she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sunny skies are expected Tuesday throughout San Diego County before a major storm system arrives Wednesday and drops moderate to heavy amounts of rain and snow through Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The agency has issued a flash flood warning that will be in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening in coastal areas and the inland valleys Rainfall totals through Friday could reach 3 inches in the San Diego County mountains, 2 to 2.5 inches in the inland valleys, 1.5 to 2 inches in coastal areas and less than two-thirds of an inch in the deserts, NWS meteorologist Miguel Miller said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate fell in September with multiple industries in the county showing employment increases, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.San Diego County's overall unemployment rate fell two-10ths of a percent from 3.6 percent in August to 3.4 percent in September. The September rate was also lower than the county's unemployment rate one year ago, when it sat at 3.7 percent.Total nonfarm employment increased in September compared with August by 700 jobs while agricultural employment increased by 100 jobs. Nonfarm employment now sits at 1,479,500.Government and educational and health services jobs all saw month-over-month increases in employment, largely due to the end of summer recesses and breaks according to the EDD. Local and federal government jobs increased by 5,100 in the county while educational and health services jobs increased by a total of 1,600.The leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest decline in month-over-month job numbers, losing 2,000 jobs due to the end of summer recesses and breaks. Leisure and hospitality also saw year-over-year losses of 1,700 jobs.Yearly nonfarm employment increased 26,900 jobs, or 1.9 percent, between September 2017 and 2018,  while farm jobs increased by 100 from 2017 to 2018, a 1.1 percent growth rate.
