SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal agents thwarted a maritime human smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego Tuesday morning, taking 14 undocumented immigrants into custody and arresting two of them on suspicion of leading the group illegally into U.S. waters. Personnel with the U.S. Coast Guard spotted the border-crossers' boat heading north without running lights near the international marine boundary at about midnight, according to U.S. Border Patrol public affairs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - NASA astronaut and UC San Diego graduate Kate Rubins arrived aboard the International Space Station Wednesday, where she and two Russian cosmonauts will conduct research over the next six months.Rubins, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov launched from Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft and arrived at the station's Rassvet module at 1:48 a.m. PST following a two-orbit, three-hour flight, according to NASA.The trio joined Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, who have been aboard the complex since April. Ryzhikov will become the commander when Expedition 64 begins Oct. 21 and Cassidy, Vagner and Ivanishin will depart for Earth.The spaceflight marks the second for Rubins and Ryzhikov and the first for Kud-Sverchkov, who will live and work aboard the outpost for six months, conducting research in technology development, Earth science, biology, human research and more. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An April 30 trial date was set today for a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than 31 years ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, now 62, was arrested in June and charged with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Investigator Tony Johnson of the San Diego County District Attorney's Office was reviewing the cold case in May when he decided to submit a single fingerprint found on Hayden's stove to a national database.He found a match: a print submitted by police in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest on charges of communicating threats, authorities said.The fingerprint allowed San Diego detectives to issue a warrant for Ford's arrest in July.RELATED: Man pleads not guilty in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanThe case is expected to get pre-assigned to a judge next month. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in the strangulation death of a City Heights woman a half-century ago was behind bars Tuesday following his out-of- state arrest last weekend, San Diego police reported.John Sipos, 75, was taken into custody Saturday in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, on suspicion of murdering 24-year-old Mary Scott, who was found slain at her home in the 4000 block of 39th Street on Nov. 20, 1969, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs."The investigators exhausted all leads at the time, and the case eventually went cold," he said.Recently, cold-case investigators identified Sipos as Scott's alleged killer via forensic genealogy, said Dobbs, who declined to disclose further information about the circumstances of the homicide.Sipos was being held at Lehigh County Detention Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, pending extradition to San Diego. 856

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A public hearing regarding the proposed placement of a convicted sex offender at a supervised home in Pauma Valley is scheduled for July 31, officials said today.Joseph Bocklett, 75, was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19- year period involving victims between the ages of 4 and 9, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. He was last sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term and later civilly committed to Coalinga State Hospital to undergo treatment.Bocklett is classified as a Sexually Violent Predator, a designation for those convicted of sexually violent offenses and diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them a danger to the public.Bocklett petitioned the court last year to be granted release into the Conditional Release program and on Monday, the Department of State Hospitals proposed that Bocklett be housed at 15077 Adams Drive.Sexually Violent Predators are monitored via GPS ankle devices and are typically placed in low population areas.Members of the public may submit comments regarding the proposed placement location until July 14.
