MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Marine Corps Air Station Miramar held an annual mass casualty drill Tuesday ahead of this year's Miramar Air Show. The scenario, centered around an F-35 crashing off the end of the runway into the crowd, included about 20 people playing the part of the injured, complete with fake blood and shrapnel wounds."Getting everybody together is very crucial because one fire department, or one hospital, or one ambulance company cannot handle a large scale incident with a lot of patients," MCAS Miramar Fire Captain Paul Jacobs said.WHAT TO KNOW: MCAS Miramar Air Show 2019The importance is paramount as accidents have happened in the past. In October of 2004, a stunt pilot completed a loop too low and crashed into the flight line, wrecking the plane and ultimately killing the pilot. The base is also set to receive several F-35 aircraft this January. The annual drill helps the base, military personnel, firefighters and local ambulance companies work together and see if there are any weak points. Coordinating resources and communication are two key factors in the drill. The drill also highlights the air show's theme, "Salute to First Responders," as it illustrates how crucial personnel are when disaster strikes. The Miramar Air Show returns Sept. 27 - 29 and is free to the public. 1314

MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The contractor involved in Monday’s deadly gas explosion in Murrieta did not call 811 as required by law, according to officials. One SoCalGas worker was killed in the explosion and more than a dozen people were injured. If a homeowner or contractor plans to do any digging into the ground, there must be a call placed to 811 two working days in advance, according to state law. Investigators say a solar company was working on the Murrieta home when the explosion occurred. That company, Horizon Solar Power, would not specifically address the incident. A spokesperson told Team 10: “Yesterday, four members of our team were at the site of a residential explosion in Murrieta. We are working with authorities and collecting facts to better understand what happened. Our primary thoughts are with the people who were injured and their families, including with the family of the person who lost his life.”An SDG&E spokesperson said 811 must be called for projects including landscaping, fence, and patio projects. In San Diego County when you place that call, SDG&E will mark the location of buried utility owned pipelines and other lines. The service is free.RELATED: Utility worker's body recovered after Murrieta house explosionSDG&E receives between 12 to 13,000 Dig Alert location requests each month. Last year, utility crews were called to repair approximately 306 natural gas lines damaged due to construction or landscaping, according to a spokesperson. This year so far, there have been more than 90 preventable gas leaks. Starting July 1, 2020, the new California Underground Facilities Safe Excavation Board (Dig Safe Board) will begin enforcement, according to SDG&E. Enforcement will include anything from training classes and/or fines up to ,000. The Dig Safe Board is responsible for issue fines. 1866

More people are interested in growing their own food and living a more sustainable life. That can be for people living off the grid or for people living in large cities."We are 50 by 126 ft. in the neighborhood of Ruby Hill," said Sharona Thompson.Less than five miles from downtown Denver, Colorado, nestled among standard city lots, sits Thompson’s urban homestead and the Ruby Hill Tiny Farm School."We grow tomatoes, squash. We’ve got pumpkins arching over, we’ve got chickens, we’ve got rabbits, we have bees, we have worms, and a cat that guards the whole school," said Thompson.Every inch of her yard is planned out to be the most beneficial and sustainable. She has two 55-gallon rain barrels that she uses to water the plants, and she also captures rainwater from her roof."We have it go down the gutter, into this little piping system. That goes under the ground, the sidewalk, under this bed and comes out to the tomatoes over here," said Thompson.Even the housing for her chickens has multiple uses. The coop catches rainwater which leads to a cherry tree. And, since the chickens are only 3-feet tall, she built a greenhouse on one side, allowing the chickens to roam underneath."With chickens, they give us eggs, but also they give us manure, and we can actually turn that manure into the soil and have more fertile soil," said Thompson.Thompson has been growing on her lot since she moved in nine years ago. She says especially now with COVID-19, more and more people are planting on their own land. She says seeds and plants are hard to come by."That’s a good sign to me. Sometimes we need a crisis to kind of wake us up to be active and to really see where some of our vulnerabilities are," said Thompson. She says while we’re not in a food emergency right now, she feels secure knowing she could live off her yield."If there was a food supply chain kink, for whatever reason, I know I can still go outside and get my food and know how to preserve it," said Thompson. But there’s also a sense of pride in her tiny farm by doing something our ancestors did many generations ago."When I go out here, and I see the plants growing and changing from winter to the end of summer, I feel so satisfied on a deeper level that I know how to do this," said Thompson.Through her tiny farm school, she teaches kids and adults how to start and build their own urban homestead."When I bring students here and they learn, it’s beautiful. They are like, 'I want to do something like this.' I’ve had several people say that they want to start schools too to share this information. It’s empowering," said Thompson. 2619

National Guard troops stationed along the US-Mexico border have contributed to 1,600 apprehensions of people crossing the border illegally and the capture of about 1,000 pounds of marijuana in their three-and-a-half weeks on the job, according to a Customs and Border Protection official. The official said the National Guard troops have also contributed to 451 "turn backs," where individuals abandon an attempt to illegally cross into the US.The official did not have comparison numbers available, so it was not possible to determine if those figures were substantially more than if National Guard troops had not been dispatched to the border. 652

More than 136,000 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 in the U.S. on Tuesday according to a Johns Hopkins database, marking the fourth time this month that the country has broken the record for confirmed COVID-19 cases in a single day.Tuesday also marked the deadliest day of the pandemic in several months. More than 1,400 Americans died of the virus on Tuesday, the most recorded in a single day since 1,500 Americans died of the virus on Aug. 12.Tuesday's tally shattered the previous record of 128,000, which was set on Saturday. The mark continues a disturbing and troubling trend as health officials suspect spread will only increase as social gatherings move indoors during winter months.About a million Americans have contracted COVID-19 in the first 10 days of November. While the exploding spread rate is concerning on its own, several states across the country report that they are nearing full hospital capacity as severe cases of the virus increase.North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said earlier this week that hospitals have already reached operating capacity and fears that facilities could be pushed past their capabilities in the coming months. In Iowa, the state's largest city is also nearing hospital capacity as available beds dwindle.More than 10.2 million Americans have contracted virus, and 239,000 have died since the virus reached the U.S. in February. Both figures lead all other countries around the world. 1437
