Jennifer Duarte said owning a bakery is a dream she’s had since she was a child.“There was a bakery close to my house and the lady worked in the window,” said Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display. “I would go and I would just stand there and watch her and said, when I grow up I want to do that.” That’s what she did. She has owned Elegance on Display in Fallbrook for 15 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic—and her specialty being wedding cakes—she’s lost a decent chunk of income.“I had 50 weddings postponed… maybe eight of those are canceling completely,” Duarte said. She has three employees, two of which she had to lay off. She hopes to be able to rehire her employees, but for now, she’s just trying to stay in business. With some items, like eggs, hard to find on store shelves, she’s using her connections to provide a service to her neighbors and also make some up some of her lost income. “We can order bulk through our bakery supplier. Last week, I got flour, sugar, eggs, and butter,” Duarte said. She repackages it in smaller amounts to sell to her neighbors. She said she isn’t making a big profit, but the community has been great lending their support. “So many people realize that there’s not a huge mark up on it. They’ve been tipping or volunteering to help with deliveries,”she added. Duarte is also still making cupcakes, cookies, and small cakes for people who would like to place an order. “I’m just trying to bring a little joy to everybody who’s stuck at home. Facebook and Instagram were both having issues as users reported problems with the social media sites early Tuesday morning. According to downdetector.com,  the East coast is reporting the most problems with Facebook in the United States, but issues are being reported globally as well. This is the second time this month users from all over have reported Facebook being down.Instagram users were also reporting problems, according to downdetector.com.Some of the problems with Facebook included not being able post status updates, the page not loading at all or loading very slow, not being able to send messages over Facebook's separate Messenger app and some saying they received an error message indicating the site was doing maintenance, among other issues.Instagram users reported the app not loading and showing an error message.Some people were able to access Facebook or Instagram, or both, later in the morning and without problems. (KGTV) — A verbal confrontation between a North County father and son turned violent after a knife was involved, leading to a stabbing.A man and his son living in the 1100 block of Saxony Rd. got into an argument at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said. The argument soon turned into a violent confrontation though, when one of the son reportedly stabbed his father, according to City News Service.The father was taken to a nearby hospital with a single, non-life threatening stab wound.Deputies were unable to find the man's son though, after searching the nearby area using K-9 officers and a SDSO helicopter.SDSO was still trying to locate the suspect Saturday. Just ask a family in Fallbrook that’s created a new card game they call, "It's Contagious," featuring a not-so-serious side of dealing with the virus while allowing players to work through their anxiety."Folks will find that the artwork on the cards is really relatable," said mom, Lola Pickett. "And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. That’s hilarious," said Lola as she and her husband showed off various cards. "So, we have things like that. We have home haircut. We have the t-p shortage which we’re going through again." "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre.
