HESPERIA, Calif. (KGTV) - Snow and ice created dangerous conditions for Southern California drivers on the ‘White Christmas’ Tuesday morning. In San Diego County, drivers spun out on icy roads in higher elevations, including Sunrise Highway on Mount Laguna.On Interstate 15, dozens of cars piled up on the northbound lanes in the high desert city of Hesperia, Victor Valley News reported. Mobile phone video showed a man yelling for people to leave the road, followed by the sounds of crashing cars. "As soon as I hit the top of the hill, it was ice, black ice. I crashed and everyone else around me was crashing too," Brian Bolik told Victor Valley News. "A car behind us went over the embankment and rolled." Bolik said he and another off-duty EMT heard a woman screaming in the pileup, VVN reported."I knew I needed to pull her out of the situation because the cars were just coming and coming, and then diesel trucks were also coming fast and she couldn't get out," stated Bolik. "She had a broken leg. At the time I didn't think about getting hit by other cars, I just wanted to help the lady to safety," Bolik told VVN. Health experts aren't just asking everyone to have a scaled back Thanksgiving. They're doing it themselves.“Last year and the year before, we had between 20 and 30 people at our Thanksgiving table. It's absolutely my hands down favorite holiday," said Dr. Richard Besser, a former CDC director and the current CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "This year, they're going to be three of us. There's me, my wife and one of our sons.” Besser says he won’t be seeing his parents in person. They're in their 90s.The doctor says Thanksgiving is different than holidays over the summer or Halloween, because there is already stress on health care systems.“But just thinking about all of the people who will have other health care problems, people with diabetes and heart disease, someone who has chest pain and can't get into the hospital, people who may have cancer and aren't getting treated or screened,” he said.Besser says Americans have to do all they can to push through these next few months until there’s a vaccine around.“Now, I'm sorry. I know a lot of people would like to get together. But remember, we really truly are talking now about being in a final stretch towards a vaccine,” said Besser.Communicable diseases expert and college professor Jill Roberts, her oncologist husband and daughter will be the only ones in their home on Thanksgiving, as well.They've been playing it safe this entire time, so Roberts’ husband doesn't put any of his cancer patients at risk.“I'm definitely concerned about Thanksgiving. I want people to, you know, be aware that it's a risk, protect the people who are the most vulnerable,” said Roberts.Experts have mentioned this before but it's worth repeating. If you are having others over or going somewhere where you don't live, the fewer people the better. Eat outside or open the windows in the house. Companies like Coke, Hershey’s and General Mills have all said they have to pay more to get their items shipped to stores, which means wallets take a hit."I think ecommerce has a lot to do with it — just with the demand of everybody having to order stuff to have it delivered to their houses instead of actually going out and shopping for it,” Jones said.Being a truck driver can be a lucrative job right out of the gate, and it only takes four weeks of training. That’s one of the reason Sage student Miguel decided to sign up.“The money is really good, especially in this field — and I mean it’s just a lot to offer, benefits and money,” Miguel said.With a shortage of drivers, some companies are offering big signing bonuses for those considering driving. Solo drivers could receive a ,000 signing bonus, and team drivers could receive up to ,000.Jones believes more people would become drivers if they could afford the training.“With increased funding from the government helping with these new students through and getting them into the industry I think that’s a possible way,” he said.Even though Miguel is sacrificing a lot starting this career, he knows it’s beneficial to everyone.“It’s a full cycle.
