SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Star Trek fans got the surprise of a lifetime at Comic-Con Hall H Saturday, as many A-List stars made unannounced appearances. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. Fans were near tears and more than grateful to see his reprisal of the iconic role."It sounds like he rejected a lot of scripts before he was like, 'Yes this is something that I would like to be involved in," Star Trek fan, Monica Marion said.Fans also got to meet the show's new faces, including Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway.Then came the three surprise guests: Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco, and Jeri Ryan. Some lucky fans even got to meet the living legend at an autograph signing. "He is absolutely amazing. He is so iconic. He is an amazing actor and an amazing person!" Star Trek fan, Monique Vapnik said. "He's really humble and has a really cool vibe about him," Star Trek, Ammar Abbas said. San Diego (KGTV)- Improved bike lanes are making it easier for cyclists to get around. The new lanes are a part of the city’s effort to protect riders and get more people out of their cars. The city is in the first phase of its Downtown San Diego Mobility Plan. They are hoping to have at least 6 percent of commuters riding their bikes by the end of the project. Jamie Hampton has been riding her bike to work for over ten years. At times, she says she hasn’t felt safe around moving cars. “It’s challenging because you have to kind of figure out how to share a lane with a car.”The city is making it easier for riders to get around the Downtown area with protected bike lanes. White reflector poles separate the lanes. Some have another layer of protection with street parking spaces. There are also designated signal lights for cyclists. The City Council adopted the estimated million mobility plan in 2016. It calls for 9 miles of protected bike lanes in the Downtown area. “It’s a nice balance of how to share a road with a car.”The city hopes to have all three phase of the mobility plan completed by 2021. 1125

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On most days at the North Side Shack in Point Loma, you'll find Pamela Olivera. She opened the now-thriving shop four years ago."If you're really motivated, if you really enjoy something, wanna do something, you only live once," said Olivera of the gamble that paid off.While she always had a passion for cooking, it wasn't always how she made a living. Olivera was once a paralegal. She thought was a good job for a single mother of three, but it wasn't a job she loved. So, she decided to change that.  She went to the San Diego Workforce Partnership location in Chula Vista, where she found a program that would give her money to retrain for a new career. In her case, it was culinary school. "For me, they offered me a ,000 grant, the program was ,000. That's a third of the cost of the school," said Olivera.The partnership provides a long list of resources for job seekers depending on their needs. The service is free. It's a valuable tool Olivera says more people should utilize.Other resources available include career counseling, job searches, typing certificates and Microsoft Word classes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Flags are being flown at half-staff around the country today to honor fallen firefighters and to promote emergency preparedness. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. "I like to see our tax dollars going to being proactive, rather than having them create these fire barriers after the fact," Smith said. 1861

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - It started as a thesis project and now is a tool for any musician in the world to use. Dr. Chris Warren is an Assistant Professor of Digital Composition and Sound Design at San Diego State University and said “Echo Thief” started about ten years ago and is a project he’s been growing ever since. He’s been traveling around North America and using an acoustic measurement tool to gather and capture sound in different types of acoustic environments. His personal addition to the recording field is creating a way to capture sound in noisy environments. Typically, the reverb of a space can only be captured when it’s silent, like in a church. However, he has created a way do it in a loud area, like capturing the sound of being under a bridge even if there are cars driving by. He’s been using the library and plug-in with his audio production students. Then Kayla Gautereaux, a former SDSU student who is now on the faculty at the New England Conservatory, came to him and asked the audio pro if there would be a way for musicians to use his tool for their practice. Warren then created an easy-to-use website for anyone to play music or sing, and have it sound like they’re in a variety of locations. “We were able to take the sounds from around North America, a bunch of fascinating acoustic spaces, and make reverberators out them so people can virtually perform in these spaces,” he said. Gautereaux said she can now sit in her living room and sing, but it sounds like she’s somewhere else. “It feels like you’re there not just because the app has a picture there, but because you can hear the response of your voice or whatever instrument you play into that space,” she said. She also added that the space a musician performs inside is just as important as an instrument or vocals, so this is a welcome addition to the music world. 1873
